Adding yet another reason ... or is it a Freudian slip?

"President George W. Bush Tuesday answered growing anti-war protests with a fresh reason for American troops to continue fighting in Iraq: protecting that country's vast oil fields, which he said would otherwise fall under the control of terrorist extremists. (emphasis added)
While in the past he has avoided making links between the war and Iraq's oil reserves, Bush used ceremonies marking the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II to say that the Iraqi oil industry - and the wealth it could create - must not fall under the control of Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida forces in Iraq led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
"If Zarqawi and bin Laden gain control of Iraq, they would create a new training ground for future terrorist attacks."
Bush: US Must Help Keep Iraq's Oil From Terrorists August 31, 2005 (thanks to a comment by kaka on yesterday's posting)

And what if the Iraqi vast oil fields fall under the control of the Iraqi people? But NOT with their newly minted 'constitution', 'democracy' and 'sovereignty'?

Is he contemplating 'a defeat', heaven and hell forbid?

Comments:
"And what if the Iraqi vast oil fields fall under the control of the Iraqi people?"

you mean like Norway The Norwegian government established its own oil company, Statoil . An oil country wich can claim to have $37,700 GDP per capita (2003)?
A country where the OECD said "In much of other countries, the oil receipts made it possible a small number of people to pile up colossal fortunes or were used to persuade the masses. Norway avoided these two pitfalls, explain they. The receipts drawn from the funds tanker could contribute to maintain the standard of living of the Norwegians a long time after the oil reserves will have been exhausted."?

Well the UNPD just rank Norway, for the 5th time , the 1st country in the index of the human development. (GPP per capita, hope of life and level of education).

Finally Bush comes out of the closet and gives the real reason. Well almost the real reason.

Helping in keeping the oil from the terrorists, is a lunatic explanation or excuse. The only way that the “terrorists” could run Iraqi oil industry and then benefit from the wealth it generates, is that the “terrorists” are the Iraqi government. On the other hand it is alone USA who defines who is a terrorist and who not – so they can also “choose” the new government. Any nationalistic leader, who wants the oil money to benefit mostly Iraqis, will.be a terrorist. A political movement which opposes USA in Iraq issues will be naturally a terrorist organization.

In the present situation and certainly in future any Iraqi government would have no difficulties in getting technology and investments from potential oil buyers. EU, Russia, China etc would certainly be interested to co-operate with any Iraqi government Iraqis decide to choose. And they would pay with real money without money rotation (US buys oil. Iraq is forced to by US weapons, etc. Iraqis must invest part of the dollars back to US). Bush could have said straight that USA takes care that nobody else is allowed to benefit from Iraqi oil. One of the first things the occupation did was that it cancelled the oil treaties Saddam had made. Even if those treaties would probably generated money to Iraqis than the present arrangements, of which there is no data available (or at least it is extremely hard to find)...

In the past USA has favoured weak corrupted democracies (like Venezuela before) or US leaning dictators (like Marcos, Shuarto etc). It is the cheapest way to get access to the natural recourses with a laughable price and with an extreme low cost of labour. But if the rulers in strategic important countries are a nationalistic dictator or democratically elected nationalists, USA tries fast to change the rulers. A popular democratically elected leader will be replaced with a military leader. It has happened several times in the past. It is and has always been about US national (and US companies) interests – fuck other peoples’ democracy.

One little known example that USA is very much involved in controlling the areas oil industry.

Stop the organized killings of Christians in Basra by the fundamental Islamic thugs

By: iraqipapers

Since the liberation of Iraq by coalition forces on April 9 2003, A tide of fundamental Islamic movements has risen to the surface of the two major branches of Islam as enemies of democracy and civil society for Iraq people.

The new and free Iraq should be open to all political and religious and other movements on the condition they work by peaceful means, but in the Southern Iraqi city of Basra, Fundamental and some Shiite clerics have ordered their followers to implement the Islamic Shari’a or law which resulted so far in the murder of scores of Iraqi Christians because they own liquor stores or work in them! and as a result of the organized campaign of actual murders, terror, intimidation and threats to kill, make homeless and other forms of back stabbing and criminal activities, including home invasions, attacking women, forcing Christians to adopt Islam and forcibly change their religion, more than 2000 Christian family, I.E. more than ten thousands people including babies and the elderly, had to escape the city of Basra to other safer cities across Iraq leaving behind their memories and belongings and every thing they own to a uncertain future.

We demand that the American and western public and Media put pressure on the coalition forces that control Iraq to bring those Islamic thugs and their leaders to justice any way possible and to immediately stop the unjustified, hate and devil driven campaign of violence which is targeting Iraqi Christians who are the indigenous people of Mesopotamia and Iraq today and peace loving Shiites too, in order to build a society of laws, tolerance and respect to all people that make up Iraq which lived side by side for centuries despite variation in ethnicity, religion, sect, etc...

We also demand that those organizations, no matter what sect they belong to, Sunni or Shiites, be dismantled as soon as possible because if you leave the cancer it will spread to the whole body and then destroy it from within, so we ask to act before it’s too late especially those fundamentals and clerics of hatred consider the coalition and their people as well as Iraqi christians (infidels)? and eventually they will declare war on the coalition even though it liberated them from a tyranny and dictatorship!

In a free and democratic Iraq, there should be no room for religious hate mongers or killing of innocent people because of their religion or ethnicity or any other reason because the state of law must adopt the human rights charters and be encoded in the future Iraqi constitution and implemented fairly with the supervision of the international community and especially the countries that scarified so many of their brave and young men and women in the war against terror and for justice and to protect the civilized world from the forces of darkness, those forces are organizing them selves in Iraq today and some thing has to be done about them to rid Iraqis and all humanity of their poisonous danger and fundamental - crazed terror.

It's the Oil, stupids.

Now that the US/UK is in possession of the Iraqil oil fields they will not give them up. I cannot see a withdrawal of the crusader until the oil is secure in private hands.

I know there are moves in Iraq to protect the oil using the labour movement. Unfortunately organised labour is illegal now that Iraq is free. No doubt the Unions will be declared terrorists and their members' "safe houses" will be bombed.

816 killed in Baghdad bridge stampede: "Officials said 25 people died of poisoning after eating or drinking products that had been deliberately contaminated."

67th JOURNALIST KIA; TV reporter dies in Iraq covering rally: "Rafid became a target after he did a great job during the elections."

"The International Federation of Journalists on Monday urged the United Nations to investigate deaths of media staff at the hands of coalition forces in Iraq. The organization said the death of Reuters television sound technician Waleed Khaled on Sunday brought to 18 the number of journalists and other members of the media killed by U.S. troops since the invasion of Iraq."

Iraq Law on Late Constitution Changes: "Iraq's interim law says the version of the proposed constitution signed off on by Iraq's parliament on Sunday cannot be amended. Yet the U.S. ambassador to Iraq, Zalmay Khalilzad, said Tuesday he believes there still may be further changes made to the draft constitution in order to try to win Sunni Arab approval."

Several weeks ago this blog saw a series of heated exchanges about the 'Christianization' (or, not) of the military. The following (formatting as per original) reminded me of that discussion.

THE MILITARY MINISTRY - Campus Crusade for Christ
"Please support Military Ministry via the Combined Federal Campaign! We are included again this year as 'Campus Crusade for Christ Great Commission Foundation.' Half of all donations will go to Military Ministry and half to our sister organization, The Christian Embassy.

"The Military Ministry depends on people like you to help bring others to Christ and to fulfill Jesus’ call to 'make disciples of all nations.' In particular, we seek to help military men and women of all nations, who put themselves in harm’s way every day, to become followers of Jesus Christ.

"$2 per Pay Period for a year will buy: 20 RAPID DEPLOYMENT KITS (RDKs) which include a Camouflage New Testament, a Daily Devotional, and the booklet 'Knowing God Personally.' These are sent to deployed men and women.

"$5 per Pay Period for a year will buy 3 CHAPLAIN’S BOXES which includes the 'God and the Military' video to help troops with questions like 'Is it right to bear arms?' and 'Is it possible to serve in the military and also obey the Ten Commandments?'

"$10 per Pay Period for a year will pay for 10 couples to attend a Military Marriage Seminar and help them to strengthen their marriages.
"

P.S. Presumably the "Chaplain's Boxes" (above) fully document Jesus' enumerated exceptions to the commandment, "Thou Shalt Not Kill."

WHAT GOVERNMENT nationalized "the oil industry, kicking out foreign companies that were looting and exploiting the oil income?"

WHAT GOVERNMENT sent thousands of university graduates "to different countries, such as the U.S., United Kingdom, France, the Soviet Union, China, India and other countries to acquire knowledge in technology and science?"

WHAT GOVERNMENT provided "free education for all from primary school to a PhD degree; free medicine for all [residents], including diplomats and foreign companies . . ." resulting in the "eradication of poverty, illiteracy and chronic disease?"

WHAT GOVERNMENT supported "the prices of essential goods and services, such as supplying cheap energy, electricity, water supplies, transportation, foodstuff, clothing, housing, and so on?"

WHAT GOVERNMENT created an environment in which "The citizens slept with their house doors open because there were no poor people to loot or steal or cheat others?"

WHAT COUNTRY, having "solved the major problems of Third World countries," was designated by the UN at the end of the '70s as having "one of the best examples of an advanced and successful education system?"

Now, the citizens of that country are free.

How New Orleans Was Lost: "The National Guard and helicopters are off on a fool's mission in Iraq.

"The National Guard is in Iraq because fanatical neoconservatives in the Bush administration were determined to invade the Middle East and because incompetent Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld refused to listen to the generals, who told him there were not enough regular troops available to do the job.

"Now the Guardsmen, trapped in the Iraqi quagmire, are watching on TV the families they left behind trapped by rising waters and wondering if the floating bodies are family members. None know where their dislocated families are, but, shades of Fallujah, they do see their destroyed homes.

"Even worse, articles in the New Orleans Times-Picayune and public statements by emergency management chiefs in New Orleans make it clear that the Bush administration slashed the funding for the Corps of Engineers' projects to strengthen and raise the New Orleans levees and diverted the money to the Iraq war."

Chris Floyd, "The nightmare has come true": The "WMD attack was no piecemeal effort cobbled together by an isolated band of cranks, but a sustained, relentless onslaught delivered by a highly sophisticated military machine: more than 6 million pounds of radioactive weaponry exploding in every part of the country, its deadly residue raining on plowed fields and playgrounds, swirling in the dust of close-packed cities, winging through vast rural expanses, settling in lungs, coursing through veins, biting into the ground, floating on the water.

"The country, of course, is Iraq, where the radical extremist George W. Bush has used more than 3,000 tons of depleted uranium -- the radioactive residue of atomic weapons production and nuclear plants -- in everything from missiles and bombs to rifle and pistol shells. As ITT notes, each DU explosion releases clouds of poison particles that disperse over a wide area and stay radioactive for billions of years. This dispersal pattern means that the American soldiers handling and firing DU ammo -- or just walking through areas blasted by the shells -- get just as poisoned as the thousands upon thousands of Iraqi civilians stricken by Bush's WMD.

"And so the dirty bombs will keep falling -- weapons of terror, the stuff of nightmares, a war crime whose virulent harvest will be reaped in the pain of children yet unborn."

US Forces slaughter dozens of civilians in Iraq "A number of news agencies in the Middle East and the Cuban official newspaper, Granma, have quoted local security forces who confirm that 56 civilians were murdered in the multiple bombing raids which were carried out with indiscriminate callousness, as is the norm with strikes by the US Air Force, slaughtering women and children who were inside the houses. What can the excuse be? Today a child, tomorrow a terrorist so it's better to kill him now?

"The strikes have been confirmed by US military sources, who claim to have killed Al Qaeda operative Abu Islam."

"Every day now, and with every additional soldier senselessly blown to eternity, George W. Bush's nightmarish experiment in proto-fascism sinks deeper into the grave to which it so deservedly belongs.

"The era of George Bush is over. The emperor has no clothes, and everyone can now see it. America is finally awakening, its head pounding and its stomach churning, from the 9/11-induced credulity binge of the last half decade. . .None of the old bad magic works anymore - not the lies, not the diversions, not the endless repetition of hollow slogans, and not the character assassination of White House 'enemies'. Game over."

A Declaration of War: "The US has issued an open threat to the other 190 U.N. member states, the social movements and peoples of the entire world, and the United Nations itself."

Robert Fisk on yesterday's Baghdad bridge tragedy -
In Iraq, a man-made disaster: "When hospitals could take no more victims, the bodies were laid side by side on the footpath and covered with white cloths and foil blankets. It was a scene of raw and pitiable emotion as women pulled back the covers in a desperate search for loved ones."

Security barriers worsened deadly Shiite stampede: "I died over and over again," said Iraqi Army Col. Hassan Jabouri, who carried away many dead children. "It's very hard to see a baby die in front of you."

"About 35 percent of Louisiana's National Guard is now serving in Iraq, where four out of every 10 soldiers are guardsmen. Recruiting for the Guard is also down significantly because people are afraid of being sent to Iraq if they join, leaving the Guard even more short-handed."

Bush 'Criminally Insane'
To no one's surprise, Havana has a distinct dislike for the administration of George W. Bush. In this op-ed from Cuba's Juventud Rebelde, the case for having Bush committed as insane is made using the latest polling data from AP-Ipso, which, the author writes, indicates that Bush's grasp of reality is in serious doubt.
(Does this mean I'm Cuban?)

Let's Call It 'the War On Non-CIA Endorsed Terror'

"If I Were America’s Secretary of State and wished to dissuade my President from attacking Iran . . . "

New Orleans mayor issues 'desperate SOS'

An old man in a chaise lounge lay dead in a grassy median as hungry babies wailed around him. Around the corner, an elderly woman lay dead in her wheelchair, covered with a blanket, and another body lay beside her wrapped in a sheet.

"I don't treat my dog like that," 47-year-old Daniel Edwards said as he pointed at the woman in the wheelchair. "I buried my dog." He added: "You can do everything for other countries but you can't do nothing for your own people. You can go overseas with the military but you can't get them down here."

MadAsHell; Add this futile desperate plea...
"IF ANYONE IN THE U.S. GOVERNMENT IS READING THIS AND HAS CONNECTIONS TO FEMA, please have them get boats to Charity Hospital in New Orleans and rescue the patients, nurses, and doctors who are stranded there. Many patients have already died and new patients are arriving to a hospital without power, with unsanitary water, and patients in intensive care who will die if there is not IMMEDIATE help. The hospital staff's situation is also grave. The situation at Charity Hospital is desperate and these people must be evacuated NOW!"

Jewish gunman was no terrorist, Israel rules: "Four Arab Israelis shot dead by a soldier opposed to the closure of the Gaza Strip settlements are not victims of 'terror' because their killer was Jewish, Israel's defence ministry has ruled, and so their families are not entitled to the usual compensation for life.

"The ministry concluded that the law only recognises terrorism as committed by 'organisations hostile to Israel.'"

(What can one say about such a narrow-minded racist state-condoned heartless response?)

P.S. Come to think of it, the Israeli response would be totally intelligible to George Bush his associated pack of marauding thugs. (Monkey see, monkey do.)

And then, there are human beings: "People of Iraq from all faiths quickly gathered to help and show solidarity. Most notably, the heroic people of Falluja, themselves losing thousands in the American bombardment of their 300,000 city not so long ago, gathered to donate blood and support the victims of the bridge. Thousands of Falluja people converged on four mosques in their ruined city today to donate blood, while local cars took the blood-donated directly to the Baghdad."

In Iraq, Health Minister demands resignation of two Cabinet colleagues over stampede that killed nearly 800 Shiites

Accountability, a concept totally foreign to the Bush administration, might usefully be imported from Iraq. (Is it possible the wrong country got invaded?)

Bush Fiddles While Rome Burns: "With the billions, upon billions, being spent for; weapons, rockets, missiles, tanks, guns, prison camps, gas, clubs, barbed wire, tsar guns, bunker busters, scanners, ships, planes, spy satellites, fact finding missions to Bermuda, concrete barriers, cameras, Ninja outfits, obscene political pensions/full health care, fleets of SUVs, [armored-unlike Iraq vehicles], a Foggy Bottom Visitor's Center, exorbitant salaries, et al; one would think that somewhere in all this, someone might have thought about protecting the citizens [one of the few real jobs of government-duh]. And now we have anarchy because of; ineptness, stupidity and a legion of bureaucrats with their dumb ass volumes of policies, procedures and agendas!"

Don't Give Your Hurricane Donations to the Red Cross: "The Red Cross have been caught time and time again withholding money in the wake of horrible disasters that require immediate release of funds.

"The Red Cross, under the Liberty Fund, collected $564 million in donations after 9/11. Months after the event, the Red Cross had distributed only $154 million. The Red Cross' explanation for keeping the majority of the money was that it would be used to help 'fight the war on terror'.

"Smaller charities that were involved with the 2004 Tsunami relief project went public to say that large charities like Red Cross and United Way were engaged in secret backroom negotiations with each other that meant a large portion of the donation money was purposefully restricted from reaching the most needy areas affected by the disaster.

"The history is clear, the Red Cross and other large so-called charities are in actual fact front group collection agencies for the military industrial complex.

"Do not give any money to the Red Cross unless you support the expansion of empire abroad and police state at home. Find a smaller trustworthy organization in the local area of New Orleans and make your donation to them'"

The Not-So-Gradual Collapse Of Empire: ". . . [W]e have now reached a watershed moment in human history in which all issues other than the survival of humanity and the ecosystems are rapidly paling by comparison. While every conscious crusader against empire, from Cindy Sheehan to Hugo Chavez, must take a stand in the way he/she feels compelled, all must be willing to face the reality that empires do not suddenly cease conquering other nations, that presidents do not run nations, and that even if they did, clean elections no longer exist in the United States. The inmates are in charge of the asylum, and they are hellbent on conquest of the last remaining drops of oil on the planet—hellbent on maintaining their power and that of the corporations who gave it to them, and they will do whatever is required to dominate the earth, including annihilating it. Name any issue except nuclear holocaust, and then measure it against the convergence of global warming and Peak Oil. All of humankind’s ills, at this moment in history, ultimately intersect with the tragic juxtaposition of those two realities."

The Saudi oil bombshell: "Saudi Arabia is about to face the exhaustion of its giant fields and, in the relatively near future, will probably experience a sharp decline in output."

- Most of Saudi Arabia's oil output is generated by a few giant fields, of which Ghawar - the world's largest - is the most prolific.

- These giant fields were first developed 40 to 50 years ago, and have since given up much of their easily extracted petroleum.

- To maintain high levels of production in these fields, the Saudis have come to rely increasingly on the use of water injection and other secondary recovery methods to compensate for the drop in natural field pressure.

- As time goes on, the ratio of water to oil in these underground fields rises to the point where further oil extraction becomes difficult, if not impossible. To top it all off, there is very little reason to assume that future Saudi exploration will result in the discovery of new fields to replace those now in decline.

Left, right: Iran and Venezuela in lockstep: " Both these 'Bolivarists' - Chavez and Ahmadinejad - can be expected to pose a grave challenge to American hegemony by offering an alternative model to any US-driven market democracy in their regions. Their vision of a 'new socialist society' with primacy on eliminating poverty and subordinating private (or transnational) business to broader social objectives puts them on a collision course with the US.

"What would happen if, once the genie of democracy got out of the bottle, the Middle East, too, were to take to the path of the 'Bolivarian' vision? The fact remains that the confrontation between Iran and the US is also a test of their relative influence in the region. For a variety of reasons, Iran's neighboring countries in the Gulf and the Middle East (or Turkey for that matter) would not play ball any more if the US were to raise the specter of a 'threat perception' emanating from the "theocracy" in Tehran. On the nuclear issue, none of the Gulf countries has chosen to identify with the US campaign against Iran over its nuclear development program. In comparison, in the early 1990s, the US could easily raise dust in the region over Iran's routine arms purchases to replace its depleted stocks."

US defends killing journalist
"It wasn't a new car, it was an older model car ... And there were two local nationals inside the car."

"Waleed Khaled, 35, had worked for Reuters in Baghdad for two years and was a key member of news teams working in the capital.

"He was a much-loved colleague who left a wife who is four-months pregnant and a seven-year-old daughter."

Oh, I get it....like humor...but different.

For excellent coverage / comment on the catastrophe of New Orleans, Danny Schechter's News Dissector Blog

Blog entry, New Orleans, Thursday, Sept. 1 12:11am.: "New Orleans Police Department Status: The situation for the NOPD is critical. This is firsthand information I have from an NOPD officer we're giving shelter to. Their command and control infrastructure is shot. They have limited to no communication whatsoever. He didn't even know the city was under martial law until we told him! His precinct (5th Precinct) is underwater! UNDERWATER -- every vehicle underwater. They had to commander moving trucks like Ryder and U-Haul to get around. The coroner's office is shut down so bodies are being covered in leaves at best or left where they lie at worst.

"They don't even know their own rules of engagement. He says the force is impotent right now. They have no idea what's going on, no coordination, virtually no comms, etc. the National Guard is gonna air drop a radio system for them with 200 radios? They are getting very little direction.

"The 3rd District bugged out to Baton Rouge because they flooded out.

"His quote: 'It's a zoo.'"

A word on the commonalities of New Orleans and Iraq: Bush.

Yes, I know Bush was not the maker of Hurricane Katrina, whereas, Bush and his fellow travelers (a far too generous descriptive) are the makers of what has befallen Iraq. But this worse than useless national "leader", flying over New Orleans from a safe elevation of 1,700 feet (that must have cheered the natives) indeed is a contributor to the New Orleans disaster. Bush and his abhorrent cronies dismissed climate change warnings, choosing rather to divert funds to the killing of people in Afghanistan and Iraq. At this time in our history calling him evil incarnate is no exaggeration. At every moment of his so far five-year reign he has chosen profit and empire and corporate looting and death and disgustingly pious platitudes over people - anywhere.

To Mr. Bush, that "life is sacred" Bush, the people of Iraq and Afghanistan and the United States all are equally irrelevant. Let it be said: Mr. Bush is not irrelevant. He needs to go.

"I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today--my own government."
MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.

Have you been following what's going on in America with that hurricane thingy? The infidel city of New Orleans has been flooded for two days now, and is rapidly descending into a state of absolute anarchy. Earlier today they even had to suspend evacuation operations when an American military helicopter came under gunfire!!

Isn't that unbelievable? Those damn Iraqi insurgents are everywhere!!

(Further to comment September 01, 2005 8:36 PM)
"It is now September 2 -- this is the second appeal to get help to Charity Hospital -- what the hell is FEMA doing? As someone who handled disaster recovery planning and training for the U.S. Navy, I can professionally say that these Bush 'disaster recovery' people are disasters themselves. Bodies are piling up in the flooded hospital basement and stairwells at Charity and no one is doing a damned thing. And Dennis Hastert, the crook who takes Turkish heroin money, says it makes no sense to rebuild a city that's seven feet below sea level. Hey, Hastert. Go choke on a pork chop, you disgraceful fat sack of horse manure!"

The Smirk of a Killer: "'True compassion,' Martin Luther King Jr. pointed out, 'is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring.' He accused the federal government of demonstrating 'hostility to the poor' -- appropriating 'military funds with alacrity and generosity' but providing 'poverty funds with miserliness.' Four decades later, de facto hostility to the poor remains government policy, and its results include widespread deaths in New Orleans that could have been prevented.

"Respect must be paid, and justice must be created. The dead cannot be brought back; the suffering of recent days can't be undone. But it's up to us to create maximum pressure for a truly adequate rescue effort -- and to organize effectively while demanding political accountability. That means depriving Bush, Cheney and their congressional allies of the power they ruthlessly enjoy. And that means ending their impunity, so that truth has consequences."

This one speaks for itself.

Americans made their choice: they could either protect the poor people in the Big Easy, or they could go off on an illegal, racist, imperialist adventure halfway around the world.

They made their choice. Now it's time to pay.

Here's hoping for (say) a nice big earthquake somewhere, to help drive the point home, the hard way. Another "Act of God" (or was that Allah, I always get confused when I think of deities that slaughter thousands of people for no apparent reason).

So... Let's hear it for our glorious President Bush, chosen by God Himself! (After all, that's what Pat Robertson says.)

"The Man-Made Disaster"
The New York Times, Published: September 2, 2005

The situation in New Orleans, which had seemed as bad as it could get, became considerably worse yesterday with reports of what seemed like a total breakdown of organized society. Americans who had been humbled by failures in Iraq saw that the authorities could not quickly cope with a natural disaster at home. People died for lack of water, medical care or timely rescues - particularly the old and the young - and victims were almost invariably poor and black. The city's police chief spoke of rapes, beatings and marauding mobs.

The pictures were equally heartbreaking and maddening. Disaster planners were well aware that New Orleans could be flooded by the combined effects of a hurricane and broken levees, yet somehow the government was unable to immediately rise to the occasion.

Watching helplessly from afar, many citizens wondered whether rescue operations were hampered because almost one-third of the men and women of the Louisiana National Guard, and an even higher percentage of the Mississippi National Guard, were 7,000 miles away, fighting in Iraq.

Things would have been even worse if a comparable domestic disaster had struck last year, when an even greater percentage of National Guard units were deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Some states had more than two-thirds of their Guard forces overseas. After several governors protested, the Pentagon agreed to adjust its force rotations so no state would be stripped of more than half of its guardsmen at any one time. That promise has been kept so far. But honoring it in the months ahead will be extremely difficult with active-duty forces so badly overstretched in Iraq, and prospects for any significant early withdrawals looking bleak.

One lasting lesson that has to be drawn from the Gulf Coast's misery is that from now on, the National Guard must be treated as America's most essential homeland security force, not as some kind of military piggy bank for the Pentagon to raid for long-term overseas missions. America clearly needs a larger active-duty Army. It just as clearly needs a homeland-based National Guard that's fully prepared and ready for any domestic emergency.

I just came upon MadAsHell's opinion above, and at the same time, had this from a friend:

"How can an American people be so weak so as to be kowtowed into war?
In addressing this issue, account must be rendered of the state of alienation in American society. It is one where the average worker’s concern for jobs and survival hinges on the health of capital and markets with no alternative in sight and, where his or her fetishising heaps of commodities and wealth represents the foremost manifestation of class consciousness; these are phenomena that combine to crown the spiritual victory of capital. The “each for himself” ethic gets hold of every mind ripping it away from its social context and, eventually, the sickness becomes so deeply entrenched such that while the war rages people watch the stock market’s response to the bombing raids.
In the way events unfold, there are seminal relationships that hold primacy above all others. These are decisive relationships that have to do with the reproduction of a way of life.
The vulnerability of wage labour to market conditions is one such relationship. Contingent contractual agreements in more developed formations give the semblance of a fair relationship, only to conceal a process of exploitation that resurges with every recurrence of a downturn in the business cycle.
Matters are yet more dismal in developing countries continuously evolving in severe crisis where, at times, even the appearance of fair trade is blighted. Class differentiations combined with unrelenting vestigial mores, frequently, coalesce to put a stop to the realisation of a common political expression. Misguided and uncoordinated modern political action could often resemble failed heroic anti-slavery revolts from the past. Of the many facets of increasing global integration, it is this capability of world capital to clone itself culturally and reproduce a congenial labour that undermines progressive class action the most. And, for what it takes, capital is vividly aware of that in its order of priority and in pacifying its most strategic corner, viz., the Near East.
Two weeks before his assassination, Hamas leader Abdul-Aziz Al-Rantisi, in the cross fertilisation of political thought, copied a slogan from the Palestinian George Habash, which utterly ushered in his death sentence, and that was ‘we are winning because our people’s resolve to carry out the struggle is unwavering.’
But more importantly, the real battle for the hearts and minds will not be won by changing the affinities of the broad Arab mass towards the US.
To win people over was never the purpose of the US.
The US will triumph by converting a real human and political issue such as that as the ethnic cleansing and dispossession of the Palestinian people into a theocratic and mythological war.
In instilling this mystification, it is wittingly assisted by three unlikely theocratic allies in the region: Israel, Iran and Saudi Arabia. All three seek legitimacy through fatalistic beliefs that engender on the prospect of war, a matter that falls neatly with the demands of an American capital that reproduces its supremacy by means of war."

2nd Annual Marathon 9/11 Truth Teach-In
U.W.-Madison Library Mall, 9 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday 9/9/2005
Madison, WI —MUJCA-NET is pleased to sponsor the second annual Marathon 9/11 Truth Teach-In on Library Mall at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

This year’s 9/11 Truth Teach-In will also link 9/11 to the related issues of skyrocketing energy prices and the New Orleans disaster, arguing that 9/11 truth is quite literally the only thing that can save the world from the coming 'long emergency' (James Kunstler) of peak oil and climate change. 9/11 doubled the military budget and launched 'the war that will not end in our lifetimes.' Yet that war must end—NOW—and the Pentagon budget must be radically reduced, so that all available resources can be focused on meeting the environmental-energy challenge. We need to bring our troops home, disband most of our military and start protecting our coastal cities, developing energy alternatives, rebuilding our railroads and planning for $10-a-gallon gasoline NOW. There is only one way to generate the political will to do this: Discredit imperialism and militarism by showing that it was our own
High Command that murdered almost 3,000 Americans to double its budget and launch its coveted wars on 9/11/01.

Attack On Iran Delayed By Katrina?

Vacation is Over... an Open Letter from Michael Moore to George W. Bush: "No, Mr. Bush, you just stay the course. It's not your fault that 30 percent of New Orleans lives in poverty or that tens of thousands had no transportation to get out of town. C'mon, they're black! I mean, it's not like this happened to Kennebunkport. Can you imagine leaving white people on their roofs for five days? Don't make me laugh! Race has nothing -- NOTHING -- to do with this!

"You hang in there, Mr. Bush. Just try to find a few of our Army helicopters and send them there. Pretend the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast are near Tikrit."

Kurt Nimmo, "New Orleans: Drowning Government in the Bathtub": "Isn't interesting China can move 600,000 people out of the way of Typhoon Talim and yet the United States was unable to move around 100,000 people out of New Orleans in the days before Katrina hit. Is it possible a communist dictatorship -- well, actually a globalist socialist dictatorship -- is more effective at protecting its people than the 'democratic' government of the United States? It runs against all the brainwashing the U.S. 'education' system attempted to pump into my brain since I entered kindergarten in the late 50s."

From Wayne Madsen Report, September 1: "Meanwhile, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was in New York shopping for expensive shoes at tres chic Ferragamo's on Fifth Avenue. (Is she the lost love child of Imelda Marcos?) A shopper confronted Rice shouting at her about shopping for shoes while thousands were dead and homeless on the Gulf Coast. Rice, showing the compassion of a shark on a feeding frenzy, had store security remove the woman. Of course, Rice does not have much to do. Its U.S. policy not to accept foreign aid in a natural disaster (always has been, even under Democratic administrations). Its considered beneath the dignity for a 'super power' to accept foreign aid. Other nations have offered aid in the past only to be given the back of Uncle Sam's hand. If this ridiculous policy were to change (along with the Secretary of State who most world leaders think is a joke), France would be the first to offer assistance to its cousins in Acadiana and southern Mississippi. Venezuela's Hugo Chavez has offered gasoline and food. Fidel Castro would offer doctors (they are top notch). Ditto aid from Russia (they've already offered helicopters but were told they could only be used to rescue Russian nationals trapped in New Orleans (3 on the upper floors of a hotel, at last count). We could count on Canada, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Netherlands, Japan, Britain, Spain, Italy, China, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Jamaica, South Korea, Brazil, Mexico, Portugal, and a number of other nations.

"And in a most disgusting example of chutzpah, the so-called 'President' Dubya strummed a guitar at the Coronado Naval Base in San Diego while thousands drowned in New Orleans. One day, Bush's name will replace Emperor Nero's as a synonym for a lackadaisical tyrant who fiddled while his nation was in need: 'Bush fiddled while New Orleans drowned.'"

IRAQ: HOW WASHINGTON IMPOSED A NEO-CON CONSTITUTION DE-REGULATING THE ECONOMY (and strangled an Iraqi Welfare State): "Washington -- not content with god-fathering an Islamist Constitution for Iraq that establishes Islamic religious principles as the basis for all laws -- also succeeded in scrapping a constitution, drafted by the Iraqis, that was modeled on that of the social-democratic Scandinavian countries, and replacing it with one that fulfilled "the wish-list of international investors,” as The Economist described the objectives of America's proconsuls in Iraq. Yet this is a story that has never been coherently told in the U.S. press.

"This remarkable tale is told in carefully documented detail in this morning's (Sept. 1) Asia Times -- the very respectable daily -- by Herbert Docena, a research associate at Focus on the Global South, a Bangkok-based policy research and advocacy center attached to the Chulalongkom University Social Research Institute. The article, How the U.S. Got Its Neo-Liberal Way in Iraq, points out that, when the original draft of the new Constitution for Iraq was published there in June, "The Iraqis - even those who were willing to cooperate with the United States - wanted, at least on paper, to build a Scandinavian-type welfare system in the Arabian desert, with Iraq’s vast oil wealth to be spent on upholding every Iraqi’s right to education, health care, housing, and other social services. 'Social justice is the basis of building society,' the draft declared. All of Iraq’s natural resources would be owned collectively by the Iraqi people. Everyone would."

September 2, 2005 -- Hurricane Katrina may be Bush's and the GOP's "Chernobyl": "The anger of the American people over the lack of planning for Hurricane Katrina, the diversion of troops, equipment, and money (including $250 million in New Orleans flood control money to Halliburton) to a quagmire in Iraq, and price gouging and fuel shortages engineered by oil companies are being talked about by Washington's punditocracy as Bush's Chernobyl, a reference to the 1986 meltdown at the Soviet nuclear reactor and the cover-up of news and lack of government response that hastened the fall of the Soviet Communist Party.

"Bush continues to show that he is channeling the spirit of Emperor Nero. He told Americans who are seeing gas prices rise as fast as the New Orleans flood waters, ' If you don't need gas, don't buy any.' This man is mentally incapable of serving as President. Would you fly in an airplane piloted by a suicidal, mentally deranged man?"

NO.

I would like to quote "iraqipapers" - "Since the liberation of Iraq by coalition forces on April 9 2003, A tide of fundamental Islamic movements has risen to the surface of the two major branches of Islam as enemies of democracy and civil society for Iraq people.

The new and free Iraq should be open to all political and religious and other movements on the condition they work by peaceful means...."

First of all, this is not a liberated or new Iraq. This is unleashed hell, and it is DIRECTLY the reponsibility of the US government. You CANNOT say, after such instances as Abu Graib, that there is anything special, peaceful nor sanctimonious about what the US is doing over there.

Let me explain something that has been circulating of late, and makes a LOT of sense to this quandry that is Iraq.

In 2000, Iraq changed its oil trading currency to the Euro, and its 'Oil for Food' programme acocunt with the UN was also in Euro. Since then, many other nations, including many of those from OPEC, have been partly or wholly trading in Euro.

This has large implications for the the US, as it enjoys an oil-backed currency which is used largely by the rest of the world as their federal reserves.

As Prof. Richard Heinberg said, if there is a widespread switch to the Euro, this could have an effect on the US currency "somewhere between serious and fatal".

After the coalition invaded and took control of the oil supply, which we all know, they converted the trading currency BACK TO US DOLLARS. Mark my words that the Israeli bombing of Lebanon, as an attempt to get into Iran and Syria, has a great deal to do with this as well. If they weild more control over the region, they control the currency. It has just been revealed that an Israeli Military official gave a private 'off the record' presentation to US officials over a year ago about their '3 week war' in Lebanon. No wonder the US is stading mute while Israel kills Lebanese civilians in their hundreds. It has been in the works for some time.

Importantly, the US have been very busy trying to undermine OPEC of late, including luring Nigeria into a trading deal (opening up the US market to the troubled nation in exchange for them setting up a new organization to rival OPEC).

All the people replying to this site who are using terms such as 'rag head', 'democracy', 'liberation', 'freedom', etc, etc are just showing an outrageous ignorance of the facts, an arrogant denial of another nation's right to its own self determination, a misguided optimism that George W's fight 'will prevail' and an outrageous racism that underscores the whole reason why the US is at war in the first place.

Lastly, I would just like to add that I do not believe that religion and the state should be mixed, ever, but that is not for me to say in other countries. However, that does not mean that secular violence should be left unchecked. Do not forget that it was the US who propped up Saddam Hussein for so many years, and the invasion has opened the gate to chaos. Look at what the US's handy work has done - made the world a far, far more dangerous place. Good Work. Now, pump up your gun supply (don't have one? oooo, let us sell you one!! Gettin' the picture?)
