"We are terrorists?" she said. "They are the terrorists!" she cried, pointing to the skies from where Israel is pounding our cities

.
"As we watch those small, innocent bodies pulled from the rubble, we seethe with anger. One desperate woman lashed out at the television crew filming the carnage. "We are terrorists?" she said. "They are the terrorists!" she cried, pointing to the skies from where Israel is pounding our cities.
... Lebanon's shoreline is now covered in thick black oil. An estimated 10,000 tons of heavy fuel oil have spilled into the Mediterranean Sea along our coast. The marine ecosystem is slowly suffocating under the sludge that is creeping down the coastline.Young forests have gone up in flames.
The damage to the agriculturally fertile areas of the Bekaa Valley and the South is immeasurable. Three of Lebanon's primary fuel reservoirs were hit by Israeli rockets, creating massive plumes of thick, noxious smoke that stood still for days under their own weight and mass. The cloud cover and stench are almost unbearable.
Everything those of us in Lebanon's environmental movement have striven so hard to achieve has unraveled in just two weeks. We are helpless to prevent this mutilation of our physical environment.
... Our land has suffered irreparable harm. And still the airplanes invade our skies, their bombs pummeling us without relief.
How is bombing a country senseless--devastating industries and homes and people and the environment--going to bring us closer to peace? What will quell the rage that is building on the Arab streets? And what of the water Jesus turned to wine in Qana--that has now turned into blood?"
Horrific bombing sows death, rage August 2, 2006

".. The time has come to decide - just like George Bush, the neocons’ poster boy, once said - “You are either with us or against us.”
For me, and millions more like me in the Muslim world, the option has now boiled down to being with the assailant or the victim, the tormenter or the tormented.
The choice, I think, is abundantly clear.
The following courageous words of Sheikh Hasan Nasrallah, the Secretary General of Hezbollah, have been addressed to the bigheaded Israelis. These also serve as a chilling reminder to the gutless Muslim leadership to reach back and rediscover their lost spine.
“You are fighting a people who have faith such as no one else on the face of the earth possesses... who take pride in their history, their civilization and culture, who also possess material power, expertise, knowledge, calm, imagination, determination and courage. In the coming days it will be between us and you, God willing.”

Israel Flattens Homes, Dozens Buried in Rubble After Airstrikes: Victims were screaming for help from under the wreckage.

Malcom Lagauche, VULTURES: When the word came out that Cuban President Fidel Castro was hospitalized and he had turned over the responsibilities of the government to his brother, Raul, the Bush administration began salivating. Within minutes of the announcement, the vultures in Washington began planning for a new "democratic" Cuba.

The U.S. arrogance is quite incredible. It is now calling the situation in Cuba a transition. And, its methods of undermining the Cuban government are identical to those used in toppling the Ba’ath regime in Iraq.

Hizbullah rockets cannot be fired from buildings (ie the one bombed in Qana): Due to the massive "back-blast" caused by the rocket launchers of these missiles, they can only be fired from open ground. To fire them from within a building would result in the instant death of the missile crew and probable destruction of the missile before launch. Most of the missiles are truck-mounted and are fired - on open ground - from the backs of flat-bedded trucks or larger four-wheel-drive vehicles.

ELIZA ERNSHIRE, No Lights in Gaza - "We Have a Death Warrant For Your Home": In Gaza the people have long endured the night-time terror of sonic-booms even before the low-flying, sound-barrier-breaking jets were accompanied by bombs and exploding shells. Now, as the war in Gaza continues unabated, the Israeli forces are tripling their psychological attacks against the already terrified civilians. Everyone can remember waking in the dark of night and calling out for a light. Everyone has heard their own little ones whimpering as they wake from a nightmare and everyone knows that to be soothed and to sooth and comfort, a light is turned on to disperse the shadows from the corners and make lie to the fears of the child.

"No, there is no one behind the door who will harm you my darling."

But there are no lights in Gaza, and flickering candlelight only heightens the fear and anxiety in the face of the mother when she tries to comfort a child. She can not say that no one is behind the door because there well might be, and if they are there they will harm her child, as the statistics of this conflict shamefully show.

There is no light, there is no fresh water to give the people, there is no sewage system and there is no way that the hospitals will be able to continue functioning. All these factors are frightening. That the 1.3 million people in Gaza will slowly starve to death, or die of some unsanitary disease, is frightening. It is the feeling that one might have in a confined space wondering how long the air will last

The Israeli Army are now calling residents on their mobile phones them to warn them of an imminent raid on their family home.

[ . . . ]

The Palestinian Ministry of Health reported that Israeli soldiers have killed 176 residents, including 40 children, and injured 872, including 272 children, since Israel declared its "Summer Rains" offensive in the Gaza Strip on June 27.

During the period between June 27 and July 31, Israeli soldiers also shot and injured 172 residents in West Bank and 520 in Gaza.

Kurt Nimmo, Panic in Detroit: In Dearborn, Michigan, Arab demonstrators are holding up portraits of Sheik Hassan Nasralla, “chanting his name and Hezbollah,” according to the Detroit Free Press. “We find any support for murderous terrorist organizations like al-Qaida or Hezbollah very disappointing, if not disturbing,” Eric Straus, chief of the counterterrorism unit at the U.S. attorney’s office in Detroit, told the newspaper. “Our office’s No. 1 priority is preventing another terrorist attack,” reports the Associated Press.

Of course, Hezbollah is not “al-Qaeda,” the infamous CIA-ISI made-to-measure terror group. Hezbollah is a legitimate resistance group, completely legal under international law, minus its stupid rocketing of Israeli settlements. But then we shouldn’t expect the U.S. attorney’s office to admit this. It should come as no surprise Nasralla and Hezbollah would find support in Detroit’s Arab community, or for that matter among Arabs and Muslims anywhere.

Osama Siblani, publisher of The Arab American News of Dearborn and spokesman for the Council of Arab American Organizations, basically told Straus and the feds to take a hike. “Who should they chant for? George Bush, the one who’s sending Israel bombs to kill their relatives, to kill more people?” Siblani said. “If they want to prosecute us, prosecute us. Let them get their buses, line them up and haul us out.” As Siblani probably knows, there are not enough buses in Detroit or for that matter the whole of Michigan to bus all the Arabs and Muslims to those brand spanking new Halliburton constructed concentration camps.

Robert Fisk, A terrible thought occurs to me - that there will be another 9/11: In fact, one of the most profound changes in the region these past three decades has been the growing unwillingness of Arabs to be afraid. Their leaders - our "moderate" pro-Western Arab leaders such as King Abdullah of Jordan and President Mubarak of Egypt - may be afraid. But their peoples are not. And once a people have lost their terror, they cannot be re-injected with fear. Thus Israel's consistent policy of smashing Arabs into submission no longer works. It is a policy whose bankruptcy the Americans are now discovering in Iraq.

And all across the Muslim world, "we" - the West, America, Israel - are fighting not nationalists but Islamists. And watching the martyrdom of Lebanon this week - its slaughtered children in Qana packed into plastic bags until the bags ran out and their corpses had to be wrapped in carpets - a terrible and daunting thought occurs to me, day by day. That there will be another 9/11.

(Question: Does Fisk still accept the official 911 story of naughty Arabs & Muslims?)

Lubna Hussain, Justice Is Dead, If You’re Born an Arab: The world is a sick place afflicted with a malaise of hypocrisy, deceit and treachery that has made it rotten to its core. The United Nations, perhaps one of the only bastions of remaining hope, was left neutered by the Israeli attack on its observation post leaving four of its personnel dead. How utterly bizarre that there was no expression of remorse or regret from either the US or British governments? . . . It comes as no surprise that Aunti Condi is flogging the dead UN horse to pretend to seek a new resolution and international force to stall for time so that the carnage can continue giving Israel the all-clear to inflict more civilian casualties and obliterate the infrastructure of an entire country.

Israeli commandos renew attack on Tyre: A resident said he saw the commandos attack the building. "They all had beards. I thought maybe they were Hezbollah," said 18-year-old Qassem Aad, who lives nearby.

Aad said that he saw several people walk out of the building with their hands up and that shooting then erupted. "I saw a man screaming — he was shot."

Ground Rules Relevant to the Middle East -
Rule # 1: In the Middle East, it is always the Arabs that attack first, and it's always Israel who defends itself. This is called "retaliation".

Rule # 2: The Arabs, whether Palestinians or Lebanese, are not allowed to kill Israelis. This is called "terrorism".

Rule # 3: Israel has the right to kill Arab civilians; this is called "self-defense", or these days "collateral damage".

Rule # 4: When Israel kills too many civilians, the Western world calls for restraint. This is called the "reaction of the international community".

Rule # 5: Palestinians and Lebanese do not have the right to capture Israeli military, not even a limited number, not even 1 or 2.

Rule # 6: Israel has the right to capture as many Palestinians as they want (Palestinians: around 10000 to date, 300 of which are children, Lebanese: 1000s to date, being held without trial). There is no limit; there is no need for proof of guilt or trial. All that is needed is the magic word: "terrorism".

Rule # 7: When you say "Hezbollah", always be sure to add "supported by Syria and Iran".

Rule # 8: When you say "Israel", never say "supported by the USA, the UK and other European countries", for people (God forbid) might believe this is not an equal conflict.

Rule # 9: When it comes to Israel, don't mention the words "occupied territories", "UN resolutions", "Geneva conventions". This could distress the audience of Fox.

Rule # 10: Israelis speak better English than Arabs. This is why we let them speak out as much as possible, so that they can explain rules 1 through 9. This is called "neutral journalism".

Rule # 11: If you don't agree with these rules or if you favor the Arab side over the Israeli side, you must be a very dangerous anti-Semite. You may even have to make a public apology if you express your honest opinion (isn't democracy wonderful?).

VIRGINIA TILLEY, Boycott Now! The Case for Boycotting Israel

Noureddine Ait Messaoudene, A Letter To Robert Fisk; The second Kana massacre and the New Middle East: The West, in general but particularly meaning western governments, has to abandon the dogma of the moral superiority of Israel over the Arabs altogether, the myth of the only democracy in the Middle East that stands as the ultimate barrier of the “Civilized World” against the threat of “Muslim Terror”. The Western powers have to come back to a more balanced view where the different protagonists are treated as equally “valued” parties in a conflict that has to be resolved through negotiation and compromise. But a compromise that does not wipe out the whole history of the conflict and try to impose an “accomplished fact” achieved solely through military superiority and so called moral superiority in the name of an eternal “divine right of Israel to unilaterally define its borders and then defend them”.

Video (7 min.), Cease Fire Now!: This video is dedicated to the children who have lost their lives because The US, UK and Israel have willingly stopped a ceasefire resulting in the deaths of many civilians in Lebanon, Gaza and the West Bank.

Soumaya Ghannoushi, Who's the extremist? Tony Blair's speech to the World Affairs Council in Los Angeles was revealing. His definition of the "arc of extremism" applies to himself perfectly. He "has an ideology, a world-view, deep conviction and the determination of the fanatic". His discourse is full of a secularised missionary absolutism, founded on a Manichean world-view of "We" and "They". The battle of the demons and angels in old Judeo-Christian apocalyptic literature turns into a conflict of good v evil in Bush's universe, and into progress v reaction in Blair's.

While constantly pointing the finger at Muslims and denying any part in the spread of terrorism, this arrogant rhetoric of neoliberal militantism, which goes hand in hand with military aggression on the ground, is terrorism's chief recruiter and the greatest threat to Britain's national security.

Today, Bush and Blair are not just giving Israel the green light to pursue its war on Lebanon. They are partners in this war aimed at reshaping the map of the Middle East. This is as though the region were a vacuum, or an empty desert - without a people, or memory - to be fashioned in light of their political fantasies and military strategies.

So far, the lofty values that Blair preaches to the people of the Middle East in his fight for their "souls", "hearts" and "minds" have ignited wars that rage to this day, in Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon and God knows where next. Yet he still believes that "we are not being bold enough, consistent enough, thorough enough, in fighting for the values we believe in". While evangelising about justice and progress, he has spearheaded the effort to block attempts by the UN, the Rome summit and the European Union to agree a ceasefire and put an end to the daily carnage in Lebanon.

Ramzy Baroud, Extraordinary Precision: A SKY News newscaster, interviewing British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett on Sunday, July 30 demanded an answer to this paraphrased question: if indeed Israel had precise intelligence that a Hezbollah operative was present in the village of Qana, in South Lebanon, how could it possibly fail to realise that the area was also crowded with civilians? Bob Chapman, Train Wreck of the Week, August 5 2006: What happens to a general who turns a military detention camp into a center for the torment of prisoners and then keeps exporting those vile practices to other US prisons until their exposure sickens the world? If the general works under President Bush, he is whitewashed of any blame, protected from even the mildest reprimand, and, finally, retires honorably with the military’s highest non-combat medal pinned to his chest.

This is what happened to Major General Geoffrey D. Miller, the Guantanamo Bay commandant who helped organize centers in Afghanistan, Abu Ghraib and a score of other secret prisons. ... We recoiled in disgust when this human slime was given a medal for "exceptionally meritorious service to the government". ...

... Perhaps we should build a statue to this snake with him attaching electrodes to the genitals of his male and female victims. America can never be the same again, we have lost our soul.

Wayne Madsen, Aug. 5/6, 2006 -- Mexico on verge of revolution as election tribunal rejects full vote recount. In a scene which was reminiscent of the US Supreme Court's rejection of a Florida vote count in the 2000 presidential election, Mexico's Federal Election Tribunal rejected a request by the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) and its presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador for a full vote recount in the recent election that was plagued by fraud committed by the neo-con National Action Party administration and supported by the Bush regime. ...

The events in Mexico have triggered into action the covert teams of CIA agents working from bases in southern Texas that were poised to create civil unrest among the Mexican right-wing in the event that Lopez Obrador won the presidential election outright. ... Already, pro-PAN agitators, paid by the Mexican federal government and CIA elements, have targeted PRD supporters in acts of violence in cities like Monterrey, Sinaloa, and Tijuana. Pro-Lopez Obrador protests are also expected in Los Angeles among the many Mexican immigrants in the city.

Robert C. Koehler, BLOWBACK FROM A BAD WAR: With the military unable to meet recruitment goals for an unpopular war, gangbangers and white supremacists are having a far easier time getting "moral waivers" to enlist, according to a recent report by the Southern Poverty Law Center called "A Few Bad Men," as well as an investigative series in the Chicago Sun-Times in May. The upshot: a future compromised in yet another way, as we train and further desensitize the psychologically fragile and psychotically embittered.

Among the costs of mobilizing for and waging war - even a "good war," with huge popular support - is a general cheapening of human life. "You know, guys like that ain't got no manhood left anyway. So it's a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them," Lt. Gen. James Mattis famously blurted out about the Iraqis during a panel discussion in San Diego a year and a half ago, to much applause from couch-potato warriors everywhere.

Such glibness notwithstanding, the actual desensitization process the military must employ to turn raw recruits into killers is serious and often irreversible. ...

... Doug Saunders wrote in the Toronto Globe & Mail: "Some observers believe this (the desensitization process) may be why mass murders have become far more common in the past 50 years."

We are, in short, inflicting a lot of bad dudes on innocent Iraqis and we will ultimately inflict them back on ourselves. Turns out the cost of waging a pointless war is even higher than the cost of waging one that has rational justification. The social degradation is deeper when we wave a soiled flag. Arthur Koestler, The Thirteenth Tribe: THE KHAZAR EMPIRE AND ITS HERITAGE: This book traces the history of the ancient Khazar Empire, a major but almost forgotten power in Eastern Europe, which in the Dark Ages became converted to Judaism. Khazaria was finally wiped out by the forces of Genghis Khan, but evidence indicates that the Khazars themselves migrated to Poland and formed the cradle of Western Jewry. . .

In the second part of this book, "The Heritage," Mr. Koestler speculates about the ultimate faith of the Khazars and their impact on the racial composition and social heritage of modern Jewry. ... [S]hould [his] theory be confirmed, the term "anti-Semitism" would become void of meaning,... The story of the Khazar Empire, as it slowly emerges from the past, begins to look like the most cruel hoax which history has ever perpetrated."
