Dead in Ramadi

Comments:
James Petras, A “Grand Settlement” Versus the Jewish Lobby: Chances for a change in the direction of US Middle East policy are extremely unlikely. The reason is the growing power of the Jewish Lobby in Congress, the massive Zionist propaganda campaign in all the mass media, Olmert’s ‘nose leading’ of Bush, and a host of related activities. The end result is that Congress will not withdraw or reduce US troops and war funding for the Iraq War. Bush, with the support of McCain and Clinton, Liebermann, Reid and Hoyer, will push for more troops in pursuit of an all-out blood bath in Baghdad. The Baker Iraq Study Group under siege from the Zioncons and Zionlibs will be unable to deal with Israeli violence against Palestinians or enter into a dialogue with Syria and Iran on any but the most narrow and unpromising terms.

* * * * * *
(The following, from James Petras' above article, I include almost as an aside, though a very important one.)

In so far as the Baker proposals advance toward a rapprochement with Iran and Syria it weakens the capacity of Israel and its Lobby to plunge us into another Middle East war, at least temporarily. Insofar as the Baker proposals move toward a timetable for withdrawing US troops, it opens space for accelerating and deepening the troop reduction. The almost total absence of the Left and “progressives” from this impending power struggle, given its world-historic significance and consequence, is in large part attributable to the influence which Jewish progressives exercise on the anti-war movement. Their refusal to recognize the Jewish Lobby as the prime obstacle and major opponent of a new US Mid East policy cripples any effective public protest. (emphasis added)

A prime example is the writing of investigative journalist Seymour Hersh, who is a constant reference for the progressives. In his latest article (New Yorker 11/27/06) Hersh excludes any mention of the Jewish Lobby and its powerful role as the only major national organization in support of a war with Iran. (emphasis added) In his earlier texts on the Iraq war planning and execution, he pointedly omitted identifying the long-standing and deep ties of top Pentagon policymakers (Wolfowitz, Feith, Rubin, Perle, Shumsky, et. al.) with the Israeli state. By systematically omitting mention of the Zionist power configuration in pushing US policy toward a war with Iran, he undermines any effort by his readers in the peace movement to act against the principal architects of a pre-emptive war on Iran. Even worse, in his article, Hersh repeats Israeli (and Lobby) fabricated propaganda about Iran’s imminent nuclear bomb threat together with his reportage on a CIA detailed study discounting those very claims. In a word, Hersh gives legitimacy and credibility to Israeli-Lobby war propaganda, while sowing doubts about serious studies by the UN-sponsored International Atomic Energy Agency, which refutes Israeli claims. (emphasis added) What is laughable about Hersh’s ‘investigative’ reporting is his breathless references to ‘anonymous high placed sources’ who provide ‘highly confidential’ information, which has already been public knowledge for weeks and sometimes months and reported on web-sites, in public documents and even by news services. Whatever ‘inside dope’ that Hersh cites which has not been public is based on anonymous sources which can never be double checked or verified and whose analysis incidentally coincides with Hersh’s peculiar penchant for blaming the Gentiles (WASPS) and exonerating the brethren.

(Recounting a long, dishonorable tradition, “Shoot those motherfuckers!" - totally hidden from the American public behind a wall of saccharine words and savvy, murderous deceit)
Charles J. Hanley, San-Hun Choe & Martha Mendoza, The Bridge at No Gun Ri - A Hidden Nightmare from the Korean War

The book recounts how two groups of humans - a group of South Korean villagers eking out subsistence living in dirt-poor Korea and a group of Americans carrying on the 'fabled' tradition of the US 7th Cavalry Regiment, the 'Custer's Regiment' - met at a place called No Gun Ri in South Korea, on July 26, 1950. The villagers, mostly women and children, were bombed and strafed by American war planes from the air and gunned down by American troops on the ground at point-blank. The soldiers made a fun game out of shooting toddlers and then driving over their victims - dead, dying and alive - and squashing their skulls.

U.S. Rates Travelers for Terror Risk: Without their knowledge, millions of Americans and foreigners crossing U.S. borders in the past four years have been assigned scores generated by U.S. government computers rating the risk that the travelers are terrorists or criminals.

The travelers are not allowed to see or directly challenge these risk assessments, which the government intends to keep on file for 40 years.

Virtually every person entering and leaving the United States by air, sea or land is scored by the Homeland Security Department's Automated Targeting System, or ATS. The scores are based on ATS' analysis of their travel records and other data, including items such as where they are from, how they paid for tickets, their motor vehicle records, past one-way travel, seating preference and what kind of meal they ordered.

Bush Administration Still Perplexed By Tendency Of Iraqis To Be Human Beings: Let's see...the number of times in human history a government official has been popular and viewed as strong by his countrymen when he collaborates with and is propped up by a foreign occupation is...wait, let me get out my calculator here...uh, that number would be...zero.

Hala Jaber, Death squads roam Baghdad's hospitals: There is said to be mounting evidence that Shi’ite death squads are being encouraged to roam hospitals in search of fresh Sunni victims, allegedly at the behest of officials in the Shi’ite-dominated health ministry.

Gabriel Haboubi, Iraq government to police press after contested Sunni burnings story: The Iraqi Interior Ministry [JURIST news archive] has announced that it is forming a specialized unit to monitor news coverage. A ministry spokesman told AP the unit was designed to correct “fabricated and false news” that he claims gives the Iraqi people the wrong idea that the situation is worse than it actually is. The Ministry further threatened to sue journalists who do not modify stories that the ministry deems inaccurate upon receiving a demand to do so.

New UN resolutions back Palestinian right to a state: The resolutions are not legally binding - as Security Council resolutions are - but they are a reflection of world opinion. Each of the six resolutions received more than 100 "yes" votes. The United States, Israel, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, and Palau voted against all six resolutions.

UN human rights inquiry: Israel should compensate Lebanon: The UN commission charged that Israel did not limit assaults to military targets and had made excessive use of cluster bombs which have continued to injure and kill after the war's end. This amounted to collective punishment, it said.

Levanon [Israel's ambassador to the United Nations] stressed Israel had no wish to injure Lebanese civilians and had tried to spare their lives by dropping leaflets and giving advance warnings of its military actions.

Kurt Nimmo, Corporate Media Uses Fuzzy Math to Minimize Size of Lebanese Demonstrations: As usual, it’s all about Iran and Syria, two targets figuring prominently on the target list of the Israelis and their neocon fellow travelers. It has nothing to do with the Lebanese people sick and tired corruption, neoliberal gangsterism, and the fact Siniora cannot protect the Lebanese from the predatory and psychopathic Israelis to the south, able to dispense a million cluster bombs and landmines with ease.

In the terrible wake of Israel’s illegal and immoral invasion, the Siniora government was nowhere to be found when it came to rebuilding efforts, while Hezbollah immediately launched a “Construction Jihad,” which included participation from the Christian Free Patriotic Movement Party, also known as the “Aounist Current.” As to be expected, any American who offers assistance in the Hezbollah effort to rebuild Lebanon will be prosecuted as a supporter of terrorism.

As Sami E. Baroudi writes, the “neoliberal ideology (or orthodox neoliberalism)” has a “great hold … over the minds and actions of the Lebanese political and economic elite,” part of a growing process throughout “the Arab world” where “one sees growing evidence of the rise to dominance of neoliberalism in inter alia: the yearning for open markets … the reduction in governmental social spending and the broadening of the tax base, the welcoming of advice and intervention from the World Bank, and the breaking of old alliances between regimes and labor in favor of new alliances with local and foreign entrepreneurs.”

In essence, this is what 800,000 people encamped outside the office-turned-residence of PM Fouad Siniora is all about, not the facile nonsense pedaled in American newspapers about nefarious Syrians and Iranians pulling the strings of Hezbollah.

John Dugard*, Israelis adopt what South Africa dropped: ... Since 1967 Israel has imposed its control over the Palestinian territories in the manner of a colonizing power, under the guise of occupation. It has permanently seized the territories' most desirable parts — the holy sites in East Jerusalem, Hebron and Bethlehem and the fertile agricultural lands along the western border and in the Jordan Valley — and settled its own Jewish "colonists" throughout the land.

Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories has many features of colonization. At the same time it has many of the worst characteristics of apartheid. The West Bank has been fragmented into three areas — north (Jenin and Nablus), center (Ramallah) and south (Hebron) — which increasingly resemble the Bantustans of South Africa.

Restrictions on freedom of movement imposed by a rigid permit system enforced by some 520 checkpoints and roadblocks resemble, but in severity go well beyond, apartheid's "pass system." And the security apparatus is reminiscent of that of apartheid, with more than 10,000 Palestinians in Israeli prisons and frequent allegations of torture and cruel treatment.

Many aspects of Israel's occupation surpass those of the apartheid regime. Israel's large-scale destruction of Palestinian homes, leveling of agricultural lands, military incursions and targeted assassinations of Palestinians far exceed any similar practices in apartheid South Africa. No wall was ever built to separate blacks and whites.

Juan Cole is surprised!
Rumsfeld's Shocking Memo: Rumsfeld openly admits that he wants to run Iraq just like Saddam did:

'Provide money to key political and religious leaders (as Saddam Hussein did), to get them to help us get through this difficult period.'

I mean, bribing people to be your puppets is bad enough, but citing Saddam's policies as an example for how Iraq should be run is absolutely outrageous. Not only did Rumsfeld want to manipulate the American public with phony "benchmarks" and "minimalist" language, but he wanted to directly manipulate Iraqis by buying off their notables.

How We Gave the Russians the Bomb: There's a certain irony, and even dark humor, in the current hysteria in Washington over the possibility that in the near future, relatively weak and distant Iran might have the ability to manufacture nuclear weapons. After all, Iran is a country that has hardly had imperial ambitions since the days of ancient Persia. Furthermore, to Iran's east, the unstable and largest Muslim country in the world, Pakistan, already has nuclear weapons in great supply, as does that bellicose and expansionist little ethnic-supremacist European transplant two country's to the west, Israel. In the existing situation in the region, the prospective counterbalancing force of Iranian nuclear weapons look more like a generator of stability than instability.

... Since the collapse of Saddam Hussein’s regime in early 2003, Washington has been as responsible for Iraq as it is for Louisiana or California. If 33 percent of Iraqi children now suffer from malnutrition, Washington is at fault. If 20 percent of Iraqis do not have access to potable water, Washington is at fault. If most of Baghdad can only rely on 8-12 hours of electricity per day, Washington is at fault. If the majority of Iraq’s schools and colleges have closed down because it is too dangerous for students to attend them, Washington is at fault. If 85 percent of Iraqis have been unemployed since the invasion began, Washington is at fault. If 1000 Iraqis die each week in the civil war that dare not speak its name, Washington is at fault. This list could be extended indefinitely, and it would all be Washington’s fault.

... My Iraqi friends . . . have all lost family and loved ones. They have all seen dozens of people killed right before their eyes, shot, blown up, crushed by armored vehicles, burned alive. Most have lost everything they ever had, except loved ones – and some have even lost those.

For these people were once scholars, engineers, systems analysts, lovers, mothers or fathers. These people once had lives. Now they are “Iraqis”, another term for the denizens of hell, the most wretched of the wretched. But for the first time in three years I do not hear hope any more. Those who dismissed the possibility of civil war by pointing out how many Sunnis were married to Shia – “I am going to wage war on my wife?” – are now telling me that Shia and Sunni clergy are declaring such marriages annulled, invalid, reprehensible, and families, or friends, or tribes are forcibly separating couples.

...[M]y friends in Baghdad — Sunni and Christian — are scared and asking for help, because the blood-dimmed tide is rising around them, and they know the killing will be cruel, long and on a scale not seen since the Nazi death camps.

... We, as representatives of the world’s people, must either take this current crisis in hand or sit back and watch no one help as Iraq turns into a whirlpool of blood that will leave the desert orange for centuries to come, and pronounce judgment over our selfish inaction as we too face the hour of reckoning, when every soul knows precisely what it has done and what it has left undone.

Iraq envoy: U.S. oil investment waiting on legal changes
HOUSTON (MarketWatch) -- U.S. oil companies are slowly building their relationships with the Iraqi government in anticipation of a new legal regime that will allow them to invest there, the Iraqi ambassador to the U.S. said Monday.
"I see very strong interest from U.S. energy companies in Iraq," Ambassador Samir Shakir Mahmood Sumaida'ie told Dow Jones Newswires after a speech in Houston.
The companies "have visited me at the embassy and expressed that interest," while "waiting for things to be put in place," he said.
The passage of a new investment law in the next two or three weeks and a new hydrocarbons law "within this year" will create the right conditions for major U.S. investments, he said.
U.S. oil companies are "already building up their relationship with the ministry of oil" and providing training to Iraqi technicians, said Sumaida'ie, who added that he would meet with Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM) executives on Monday.

Abbas J. Ali, Ph.D., Understanding Muqtada al-Sadr: From the start, al-Sadr found himself and his supporters a target of the Occupational Authority, Ba'athists, and foreign terrorists and has been the subject of fierce smear campaigns instigated by various groups including the Supreme Council of Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI), headed by Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, and the Communist Party. The first envies the popularity of the Sadrist Movement, and the second resents the fact that the Sadrist Movement is widely popular in areas that were traditionally under its influence.

Underneath the surface of Iraqi pessimism there is a deep optimism anchored on the expectation that the sooner the foreign troops leave Iraq, the better the chance for Iraq to regain its health. Muqtada al-Sadr may not be a seasoned politician, but he understands the psyche and the living memory of the majority of Iraqis. The real test is whether or not al-Sadr can persuade Iraqi political and religious groups to stop putting their faith in foreigners and act responsibly to prevent an all-out civil war.

According to U.S. contractors who have just returned from Iraq in what appears to be an evacuation of non-essential U.S. civilians from the civil war-ravaged nation, a number of U.S. contractors have pilfered the U.S. and Iraqi treasuries by running up huge bills and charging for unnecessary services.

Wayne Madsen, December 4, 2006 -- In yet another attempt by the neo-cons to use the increasingly phony-looking "Al Qaeda" as a political weapon, British Home Secretary John Reid, a leading neo-con who would like to replace Tony Blair as Prime Minister, said that any move by Scotland towards independence would benefit "Al Qaeda." Reid also suggested that the Scottish National Party (SNP), which favors independence, was playing into the hands of "Al Qaeda." The Arab "bogeyman" terrorist contrivance is being used by Reid and his neo-con supporters to suggest that the Scottish people would be vulnerable to "Al Qaeda" terrorist attacks if they choose to separate from England.

The late British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook, a Scotland native, wrote as much about Al Qaeda being a fake organization just before his untimely death. Cook wrote in The Guardian, "Bin Laden was, though, a product of a monumental miscalculation by western security agencies. Throughout the 80s he was armed by the CIA and funded by the Saudis to wage jihad against the Russian occupation of Afghanistan. Al-Qaida, literally "the database", was originally the computer file of the thousands of mujahideen who were recruited and trained with help from the CIA to defeat the Russians." Cook, as Foreign Secretary, was also the head of the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) and was privy to most of the files on the origins of Al Qaeda and its links to the CIA and the Reagan-Bush I administrations.

Jane Smith, House Demolitions in the West Bank: ... A family stood on a pile of rubble silenced and shocked. The second house demolition was just beginning, with the Caterpillar and Volvo bulldozers ripping into the top floor of the nearly completed house. As we approached four Palestinian men ran forward from behind the line of soldiers and entered their house. I was deeply moved by their courage. The soldiers grabbed the men out of the house, holding one in a tight neck lock, and handcuffed two of them throughout the demolition. Within an hour the future home was nothing but a pile of rubble. The family was powerless in this situation, and could only watch as years of labour and money was obliterated by the Israeli army. Caterpillar and Volvo are profiting from this family's grief.

M Shahid Alam, Zionism: Pitting The West Against Islam: The history of Israel has often been read as the saga of a people marked for extinction, who emerged from nazi death camps from Auschwitz, Belcec and Treblinka to establish their own country in 1948. Without taking away anything from the suffering of European Jews, I will insist that this way of thinking about Israel apart from its mythologizing has merit only as a partisan narrative. It seeks to insulate Israel against the charge of a devastating colonization by falsifying history, by camouflaging the imperialist dynamics that brought it into existence, and denying the perilous future with which it now confronts the Jews, the West and the Islamic world.

James Brooks, US and Israel targeting DNA in Gaza? Part 1 of 3: The DIME Bomb, yet another genotoxic weapon: It’s been almost five months since the first report that Israeli drone aircraft have been dropping a “mystery weapon” on Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Since then, news media around the world have run stories depicting the strange and “horrific” wounds inflicted by the new bomb. The international press has spoken with Palestinian doctors and medics who say Israel’s new device is a kind of chemical weapon that has significantly increased the fatality rate among the victims of Israeli attacks.

In mid-October, Italian investigators reported forensic evidence that suggests the new weapon may also represent the near future of US “counterinsurgency warfare.” Combined with photographs of the victims and testimony from attending doctors, this evidence points to the use of Dense Inert Metal Explosives (DIME).

DIME is an LCD (“low collateral damage”) weapon developed at the US Air Force Research Laboratory. Publicly, it is slated for initial deployment in 2008. DIME bombs produce an unusually powerful blast within a relatively small area, spraying a superheated “micro-shrapnel” of powdered Heavy Metal Tungsten Alloy (HMTA). Scientific studies have found that HMTA is chemically toxic, damages the immune system, rapidly causes cancer, and attacks DNA (genotoxic).

The only thing I have to add to this sorry story of the laisser-faire capitalist world economy (see appended) is the obvious question, "how did the Americans get this wildly disproportionate share of the world's wealth".

The richest 2 per cent of adults own more than half of global household wealth, and almost all of the well-heeled live in North America, Europe and richest Asia-Pacific countries.
