The veil of 'American Liberation' descends upon Iraqi Women
.
Iraqi university graduation ceremony
................................................Demonstrating in Najaf
"Iraqi women did not believe in putting burqa. It wasn’t even in their dictionary. When we saw women wearing it, we said they were not Iraqis. They might be either Yemenis or probably from one of the Arab Gulf countries.
However, some Iraqi women believe in putting the ordinary scarf, especially in religious areas like holy Najaf and Karbala. Most women there wear the scarf in devotion to God or to follow the traditional teachings of Islam.
This no longer exists.
After the U.S.-led occupation to Iraq, religious parties brought by the occupier from neighboring Iran and from other countries imposed their own understanding of the scarf on the secular society. They started forcing women to wear scarves directly and indirectly.
Women, who joined these “religious” and political parties or trends, started the new trend of “religious fashion”: Wearing Burqa and gloves to hide their faces and hands. Not only this, they started giving lectures to the newly joined female members to make them spread the idea of wearing hijab and burqa.
A colleague of mine emailed me a disgusting photo of how this issue is changing the shape of the Iraqi women who once were ones of the most fashionable women in the world in former cosmopolitan cities like Baghdad, Basra, and Mosul. I was so disgusted when I saw the photo. Inside me, I was shouting “Nooooooo. It shouldn’t be like this. We were not like this. Enough distortion and abuse to the women.” (added emphasis)

Um Jaafar
"
The motherUm Jaafar
(During a US raid Um Jaafar, a woman in her 40s, saw her three sons Jaafar, Haidar and Athir being killed before her eyes).
"At 2.30, the night of 21 January, I woke up to a blast that opened the door of our house in the Al-Huriya Al-Thaniya area, west of Baghdad. A group of American soldiers stormed in.
With them was an Iraqi translator, through whom they asked me about Mohamed. I pointed to my son Jaafar, whom we call Mohamed at home. Without a single comment, they moved to where Jaafar was sleeping and shot him dead. Athir, Jaafar's 28-year-old half-brother, tried to question the translator about the reason. The response was, 'the matter has come to an end.' And when he tried to go upstairs to seek the help of their elder brother Haidar, 29, an American bullet beat him to it, killing him immediately. Haidar's wife tried to defend her husband and their children, Mustafa and Ali, but one of the Americans beat her back -- on the head, with a baton -- to make way for the bullet that was to kill Haidar. The whole process took no more than a few minutes. In the end my daughter Shaimaa lay among the three corpses, injured and bleeding.
Only later did the translator ask me to fetch the identity cards of those killed -- only to realise that there was no Mohamed among them. He said simply, 'sorry, but we have killed them on a suspicion.' And the raiding force left. What happened had not sunk in when they came back, and to this day I still can not believe it; I have not visited the graves of my sons. I lost three sons like that; who would believe me? I do not believe it myself. Trying to comfort me, neighbours and relatives point out that at least I got to bury my dead; there are mothers, they say, who do not even have access to their sons' corpses once they are told they were killed. But I am a mother and my disaster feels the greatest.
Tell me, what should I do when I miss Jaafar and his brothers? I miss them. For how long will we keep losing our sons by mistake? Just tell me what to do. Can you help me not miss them?"

"This is what I call terrorism"
"Weapons of mass destruction are all over Iraq. Iraqi children are playing among them every day. According to Iraqi doctors, many are developing cancer as a result. The WMD in question is depleted uranium (DU). Left over after natural uranium has been processed, DU is 1.7 times denser than lead - effective in penetrating armored vehicles such as tanks. After a DU shell strikes, it penetrates before exploding into a burning vapor that turns to dust.
"Depleted uranium has a half life of 4.7 billion years - that means thousands upon thousands of Iraqi children will suffer for tens of thousands of years to come. This is what I call terrorism," says Dr Ahmad Hardan.
As a special scientific adviser to the World Health Organization, the United Nations and the Iraqi Ministry of Health, Dr Hardan is the man who documented the effects of depleted uranium in Iraq between 1991 and 2002. U.S. forces admit to using at least 300 tons of D.U. ordinance in Gulf War I, with up to six times that amount in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
When a loved one is diagnosed with cancer, it can dramatically alter the entire fabric of family life. The emotional impact can be huge. Imagine having nine members of your family with malignancies at the same time. Welcome to Basra, Iraq. Planning an attack on Baghdad ...
.When cornered (and defeated), smash what is left to get out (if you can).
"The American military is planning a “second liberation of Baghdad” to be carried out with the Iraqi army when a new government is installed.
Pacifying the lawless capital is regarded as essential to establishing the authority of the incoming government and preparing for a significant withdrawal of American troops. Strategic and tactical plans are being laid by US commanders in Iraq and at the US army base in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, under Lieutenant- General David Petraeus. He is regarded as an innovative officer and was formerly responsible for training Iraqi troops.
... Sources close to the Pentagon said Iraqi forces would take the lead, supported by American air power, special operations, intelligence, embedded officers and back-up troops.
... The sources said American and Iraqi troops would move from neighbourhood to neighbourhood, leaving behind Sweat teams — an acronym for “sewage, water, electricity and trash” — to improve living conditions by upgrading clinics, schools, rubbish collection, water and electricity supplies.
... “They have to show they can liberate their own capital,” he said. “Baghdad is the key to stability in Iraq. It’s a chance for the new government to stand up and say, ‘Here we are’. They can’t do that if they are hunkered down in bunkers.” (emphasis added)
... The operation is likely to take place towards the end of the summer, giving the newly appointed government time to establish itself. If all goes to plan, US troop withdrawals could take place before the end of the year. In the absence of progress by then, the war may come to be seen by the American public as a lost cause.
... US forces would try to avoid the all-out combat that was used to subdue Falluja in 2004. “If you cut up the city into pieces neighbourhood by neighbourhood, you can prevent it from becoming a major urban fight,” said Gouré."
US plots ‘new liberation of Baghdad’ April 16, 2006
"Of all the war crimes that have flowed from the originating war crime of George W. Bush's unprovoked invasion of Iraq, perhaps the most flagrant was the wanton destruction of Fallujah in November 2004.
Now, as ignominious defeat looms for Bush's Babylonian folly, some of the key players in fomenting the war are urging that the "Fallujah Option" be applied to an even bigger target: Baghdad.
What these influential warmongers openly call for is the "pacification" of Baghdad: a brutal firestorm by U.S. forces, ravaging both Sunni insurgents and Shiite militias in a "horrific" operation that will inevitably lead to "skyrocketing body counts," as warhawk Reuel Marc Gerecht wrote cheerfully last week in the ever-bloodthirsty editorial pages of the Wall Street Journal. Gerecht's war whoop quickly ricocheted around the rightwing media echo chamber and gave public voice to the private counsels emanating from a group whose members now comprise the leadership of the U.S. government: The Project for the New American Century.
As often noted here, PNAC was founded by Dick Cheney, Don Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, Jeb Bush, Zalmay Khalilzad, and the now-indicted Lewis Libby, among others. In September 2000, they publicly called for sending American forces into Iraq – even if Saddam Hussein was already gone – as well as planting new U.S. bases in Central Asia, putting weapons in space, building new nukes and funding a vast militarization of American society. Being such savvy inside players and all, they recognized that this lunatic program of aggression and world domination would not be accepted by the American people – unless, of course, the nation happened to be struck by a "catalyzing event" like "a new Pearl Harbor." Who says dreams don't come true?"

.

Iran gets to look after the Shi’ites (strengthening the covert Israeli ally), Jordan gets to look after the Sunnis (and keep them pacified and out of Israel’s hair, just like it does to its own citizens), and Turkey (!!!) gets to look after the Kurds (the Kurds should be thinking: ‘with friends like Israel, who needs enemies’). Does anyone still have any doubt that this was the neocon/Israeli plan for Iraq from the beginning?"

Lying no longer stirs deadened senses. The loud popping of biolab balloons
.
.
Back on June 19, 2003, I published an article on "the two alleged mobile biological weapons labs" pointing out that:"As the swelter of anger bubbles from the machination of misinformation that led to the faltering WMD casus belli for invading Iraq, the retreat and half-baked excuses of Bush, Blair, Cheney, Wolfowitz and Powell further expose the sharp edge of their deceit. Whether it was "intelligence" failure or "flailing" the intelligence, time will soon tell. In the meantime, the fig leaves keep falling.
During CNN's Late Edition with Colin Powell, reported by the Toronto Star on June 9, 2003, Powell claimed that "the two alleged mobile biological weapons labs, which are being studied by allied inspectors now in Iraq, are the same ones he described to the world last Feb. 5 at a U.N. presentation which was the result of four days and four nights of meetings with the CIA." "I stand behind that presentation," he said.
He further asserted, "I'll give you the killer argument why these vans were exactly what I said they were. I can assure you that if those biological vans were not ... what I said they were on the 5th of February, on the 6th of February Iraq would have hauled those vans out, put them in front of a press conference, given them to U.N. inspectors to try to drive a stake through the heart of my presentation."
Only if the Iraqis knew which vans he was talking about.
In an article published on the same day as Powell's interview, Peter Beaumont and Antony Barnett reported in the Observer that there is mounting indications that these vans were for "balloons, not germs."
The Iraqis concur.
.....
.....
Powell is not new to this misinformation game.
In my earlier article, "The demise of the nuclear bomb hoax", published on February 16, 2003, I referred to Geoff Simons' The Scourging of Iraq in which "Washington lied persistently and comprehensively to gain the required international support [for the Gulf war]. For example, the U.S. claimed to have satellite pictures showing a massive Iraqi military build-up on the Saudi/ Iraqi border. When sample photographs were later obtained from Soyuz Karta by an enterprising journalist, no such evidence was discernible."
Simons references an article by Maggie O'Kane, published in the Guardian on 16 December 1995, which revealed that the enterprising journalist was Jean Heller of the St. Petersburg Times in Florida.
Eventually, the U.S. commander -- none other than Colin Powell himself -- admitted that there had been no massing of Iraqi troops. But by then the so-called evidence had served its purpose.
So, was Powell really worried that the Iraqis might "try to drive a stake through the heart of [his] presentation"?
Well, it's never too late."
''Mobile lies'' June 10, 2003
Well, again 'the so-called evidence had served its purpose', and as an Arabic proverb goes: "If you feel no shame, then do whatever pleases you"; and Powell is indeed pleasing himself (see earlier posting Powell's 'pain' and 'terrible feeling' ... How accountable are his 'blots'? September 11, 2005).
After three years, the Corporate Media, without any sense of scruple on how they peddled this lie in the first place, finally came through, such as with the following two videos
“We found the weapons of mass destruction… we found biological laboratories,” said Bush two days after it was disclosed that the discovered trailers were nothing of the sort. (ABC, wait for few seconds for commercial to end)
Weapons of Mass Deception (NBC, click on video at the bottom)

Thick layers of stupor still engulf the American people who naively wonder "Why do they hate us? We didn't make the decision to go to war". Indeed, they only decide to consume or not consume, pay the taxes for the bombs and pray for not to hear of their dead and wounded soldiers, as the Pentagon has allowed them close to null news visibility of their tens of thousands of casualties.

"There seems to be a dispute about the veracity of the Iraqi resistance claims that they are able to shell US military outposts and barracks.
Please see the two videos below.
The first is of an "insurgent" missile hitting a US military ammunitions depot (more than four minutes long). Why was this not reported in the media?

$18 billion - Iraq's Annual Oil Losses
."I have recently chosen to discuss the question of the Iraqi oil with a senior Iraqi oil expert, who, given his clout over the local politics in Baghdad, is quite informed of the current developments there.
In fact, just like any other Iraqi regretting the country's stolen and siphoned wealth, my old friend explained to me in figures how Iraq loses every year some $18 billion of oil funds as a result of smuggling, sabotage, and lost opportunities.
First, I have inquired about the Iraqi revenue as calculated in Iraq's budget - with an exported 1.6 million b/d and a shadow price evaluated with the IMF at $46.1 a barrel or some $27 billion a year.
At this, he simply laughed, saying, "These figures are nonsense. This is the century's scandal, not to mention the continuous developments. For the country loses every year $18 billion of oil receipts."
He then accurately explained to me in numbers how Iraq's wealth is plundered nowadays......"$18 billion - Iraq's Annual Oil Losses by Walid Khadduri, April 11, 2006See also a previous posting: Oil matters ... An occupier's diplomatic transgression ... and ... servitude
.Samir Al-Sumaida'ie was appointed as Iraq's "ambassador" to the U.S. on March 10, 2006. (See the Arabic version, مرسوم جمهوري رقم 15 ).On April 11, 2006, Secretary Condoleezza Rice proclaimed: "We are delighted that we have the opportunity to receive the credentials of an ambassador from a free Iraq". There are two points that are of note:1- Why is the U.S. in such a hurry to officially install an ambassador, representing a transitional government, and before the formation of the 'elected' new Iraqi government?2- And has Samir Al-Sumaida'ie so easily swallowed his media campaign that he had unleashed, while being Iraq's U.N. ambassador last summer, after the cold-blooded killing of his nephew by U.S. soldiers in his home in Haditha. He even ventured to state this about that single incident: "It is a betrayal of the American people who are making huge sacrifices to bring this about, and a betrayal of Iraq and all Iraqi patriots who have put their trust in the United States."Iraqis recall Sumaidaie as the minister of the Interior under Allawi's 'transitional government' who, upon being skipped over for yet another ministerial post, high-tailed it from Iraq with the famous saying: "It is much better that one looks after the businesses that he left behind" (in Arabic), as he is a U.S. citizen with several businesses. Hence, he accepted the well-paid U.N. post, to represent Iraq, where his silence against the daily atrocities by U.S. soldiers in Iraq has been stupefying, yet hollers with indignation when it is a relative of his, and the occupier obliges.See a previous posting Promoting "the rule of law" in that environment, July 4, 2005And now it seems that his 'business' has been well looked after. Our celebrated Iraqi poet Badir Shakir Al-Sayyab (who died nearly 50 years ago) best described the likes of Sumaida'ie in one of his well known poems (in Arabic) : “The Invaders Shoe Shiners":I am what you want me to be,
I am the despicable invaders' shoe shiner,Seller of blood and conscience. For the invaders, I am the crow that feeds on pigeon corpses,I am the ruin, I am the destructionThe lips of the whore are more virtuous than my heartThe wings of the fly are purer and warmer than my handsAs you wish me to be ..... ـ

To the enduring and dignified Iraqi people
To our Arab brethren
Ever since Iraq’s soil was soiled by the occupiers’ boots, and by the boots of their local and foreign puppets, your brothers in the armed forces have been determined, with full confidence, to stand steadfastly against this occupation and its consequence of sectarian strife that was in fact planned for and ignited by the American occupiers and their puppets, as well as those harbouring ill-intentions for Iraq.
Ever since the start of the occupation, your brothers and sons in the armed forces have risen to fight the enemy on our grounds and within a clear military tactical strategy whose success have made the enemy taste the bitterness of their deeds and conspiracies. The ensuing military work, and its Command, was carried out in complete secrecy in order to evade any infiltration by enemy spies of the top-level military commanders, who have been steadily supplying the various armed Resistance groups with many qualified and experienced military officers in order to assist these Resistance groups in their military plans and operations on their own chosen battle fields.
We, at the General Command of the Iraqi Military Forces, now declare our responsibility for many heroic operations, whose archives and proof we shall soon provide, that have been carried out by your sons and brothers throughout Iraq. We solemnly announce to the world that the Resistance is intrinsically Iraqi, in blood and identity, and is carried out by the Iraqi armed forces and the heroic and patriotic Resistance groups. The General Military Command strongly condemns any violence that is perpetrated against the security of the ordinary Iraqi citizen, in whatever form or shape.
Iraqis
Your army was not dissolved by the occupation juggernaut. It remains your protector with its soldiers and officers who are from you and for you. It is compromised from all sectors of the Iraqi society. It is not led by any political party neither does it represent any single sectarian faction. It is a national army for a united Iraq. It will remain the shield for this country and strives, in cooperation with all who would assist Iraq in its struggle, from the Arab and Islamic world and throughout the world, to achieve the following objectives:
1- The liberation of Iraq from the claws of the occupation, and regaining Iraq’s sovereignty, unity and independence and the control of its inalienable right to utilize its economic resources for the betterment of the Iraqi people.
2- The reform the Iraqi army on the basis of patriotism, efficiency and dedication and strive to equip it with the most suitable military hardware within the context of an Iraqi military plan.
3- The release of all those that are detained and imprisoned in the occupier’s prisons and detention centres who were interned because of their patriotic stance against the occupation.
4- The struggle against all forms of sectarian and ethnic manifestations that have been nurtured by the occupiers and their puppets and which tear apart the national fabric and unity of all Iraqis, and strive to establish security and safety for all citizens.
5- The demand for the full repatriations for all material and pertinent damages inflicted upon Iraq as a result of this occupation, as well as those resulting from the economic embargo that had preceded it.
Iraqis, take solace for you have brothers in arms who have promised God and the nation, and promise you, to shed their blood for achieving the above aims. And in order to strengthen your resolve, this Military Command announces publicly the formation of the following Army Units in the designated field of operation, and as follows:
1- “The Mansoor Forces Command” in Baghdad governorate.
2- “The Saad Bin Abi Waqas Forces Command” in Diyala governorate.
3- “The Hamza Forces Command” in Wasit governorate.
4- “The Al-Faris Forces Command” in Salah Al-Din governorate.
5- “The Thoul-Fikar Forces Command” in Thi Qar governorate.
6- “The Abu Obaida Forces Command” in Central Euphrates governorate.
7- “The Hussain Forces Command” in Anbar governorate.
8- “The Mohammad Al-Qasim Forces Command” in Basra governorate.
9- “The Rashid Forces Command” in Ta’mim governorate.
10- “The Amouria Forces Command” in Ninawah governorate.
Brave Iraqis
With this announcement, we are confident that are working amongst and for our people, families and brothers. We swear by the Almighty, by the sacred Iraqi soil, by the blood of our martyrs, by the honour of the free men and women of Iraq, by the innocence of our children and by the suffering of our mothers and elders that we shall remain committed to fighting till death for Iraq’s liberation and achieve our goals.
God is Great. Victory and Unity to Iraq.

The sham of 'sovereignty' in occupied Iraq ...
.
The below are my translated excerpts from an article (in Arabic below, April 4, 2006) regarding an incident which exemplifies Zalmay Khalilzad's (the present American ambassador in Iraq) utter contempt for the 'sovereignty' of occupied Iraq. The background issue to this event is the attack on the al-Mustafa Shia mosque in Baghdad on March 26th, which killed at least 16 people by a 'special Iraqi death squad' (that is directly linked to the CIA). This American trained 'special death squad' was accompanied by several American 'advisors', who did not participate in the melee but merely observed the slaughter:
"In a meeting last Wednesday (March 29, 2006) that was held at 'president' Jalal Talabani's home near the Green Zone, which assembled the heads of the various Iraqi sectarian parties for crisis discussions, the American ambassador Khalilzad joined the gathering along with the US Consul, Robert Ford. Upon being seated, Khalilzad responded to the usual welcoming greetings of the assembled. He then turned to Jalal Talabani with a sarcastic smile and intoned in broken Arabic (as he had learned a broken Lebanese accent of Arabic during his studies at the American University of Beirut): "Mam (uncle) Jajal, have you heard of the latest joke?".
Talabani was taken by surprise and quickly assumed that he was the intended pun, as many jokes about him are now circulating among Iraqis, as part of the local kaka (Kurdish for brother) jokes that abound. He was even asked to recite a kaka joke of his own liking during a recent Iraqi TV interview.
{Talabani's own joke at that interview was the following: "A kaka was in an airplane when it encountered a serious malfunction and the stewardesses began to throw items out the airplane door to reduce the airplane's weight. When asked about whether they might dispense with his chair, the seated kaka replied: "No matter, so long as it is government property"}.
Talabani's guarded response, as he feigned laughter, to Khalilzad was that if the joke is about the Kurds would Khalilzad please tell it to him in private, in order that it would not to be exploited by the 'others', with Talabani winking at the assembled heads of the other sectarian parties.
"No, no", replied Khalilzad, "it does not concern you, for I heard it in the news and it was also carried by major media outlets in the aftermath of the 'accident' at the Mustafa 'building' (that is exactly how he called the mosque). The joke goes like this. Some of the Alliance leaders, from the Da'wa Party and the Sadr group (Khalilzad did not include Al-Hakim's and Adel Abdul Mahdi's SCIRI, the third member of that Alliance) have asked Ibrahim Al-Jafaari, as head of the government, to expel me from Iraq".
A heavy silence fell upon those assembled in the hall, only to be interrupted by Robert Ford who spoke in very broken Arabic: "Apparently the assembled 'blothers' (brothers) did not get the joke because they did not laugh, while the joke is really 'deadly' (Arabic metaphor) funny".It was only then that the solemn 'dignitaries' and Talabani jolted into a response putting on some thin smiles, while smirking smiles flashed on the faces of those that were not in the butt of the joke. The targeted Alliance leaders hung their heads in shame and consternation, among them Humam Hammudi, Hussain Al-Shahrastani, Jawad Al-Maliki and others.Khlalizad did not stop there in his ridicule of the 'Alliance', but continued in a cynical bout of outburst laced with a razor sharp threat when he declared: " Do not forget that we are your benefactors, except for the 'Tawafiq' (Allawi) and the 'National Discourse'. This is a fact that is known by all, and nobody can evade this favor. Hence, we shall smite (brandishing a hand grip) the mouth of anyone who dares to utter such stupid declarations, and we shall have to discipline him and expel him back to where he was living abroad before their return to Iraq".Talabani interceded trying to calm down the tense atmosphere that gripped the meeting: "Dear Zalmay, we are all indebted to you, as you are more than our friends, especially us the Kurds and the Shia'a. It is true that some brothers here (pointing to the Alliance) have indeed erred and have uttered some irresponsible statements against you. They are ready to offer their apologies to your Excellency ..." . Khalilzad interrupted him saying: " I do not want any apologies. I shall know how to respond next time if they ever repeat their threat again, and I shall restore their senses for them. I will show them who can expel who from Iraq (emphasis added). We are the ones who brought them here. We have opened for them the doors of opportunity, work and freedom. We have provided protection for them which, if we ever decide to remove it, then none of them will stay in Iraq for one hour. They should learn to respect themselves, or else.. ". Khalilzad then cut short his statement and turned to Talabani speaking curtly:" I am going to leave this meeting now as I have another appointment. Mr Ford will stay with you. Continue your meeting"..

"Is it still worth it?"
."Listening to an interview with the US secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice, this morning on the Today programme, I felt physically sick, especially when she said: "Thousands of mistakes were committed in Iraq". I couldn't listen to the rest of her sentence; was she about to echo Madeleine Albright's "but the price is worth it"?
In May 1996, the 60 Minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl asked Albright, then US ambassador to the UN: "We have heard that half a million children have died [as a result of sanctions against Iraq]. I mean, that is more children than died in Hiroshima. And, you know, is the price worth it?"
Albright responded: "I think that is a very hard choice, but the price, we think, the price is worth it."Is it still worth it? by Haifa Zangana, April 1, 2006.

How to effectively discourage U.S. military recruitment
."In a change to Army tactics, U.S. soldiers will stand and fight instead of shooting and pressing on when their convoys are attacked on Iraqi roads, according to Harvey Perritt, spokesman for the Army’s Training and Doctrine Command at Fort Monroe, Va.“In the first two years of Iraq, convoys (under attack) just fired and kept rolling,” said Maj. Roger Gaines, the battalion’s operations officer said Thursday. “That gave bad guys the perception that Americans run away. Now, convoys will stop and engage the enemy.”Convoys will now stand and fight when attacked in Iraq March 31, 2006This 'policy' has already been implemented : "Instead of facing the Resistance fighters, the American soldiers choose the nearest house and kill everybody in it. This is what has recently occurred in Haditha, Al-Ishaqi massacre, and in Samarra". (In Arabic, below

Divide and rule
Below are three articles. The first two are serious and highly commendable reading."Since 9 April 2003, the US has been trying to foment sectarian tendencies. This may explain the tensions we see today. Doctrinal differences within Islam were never a big deal. Islam is open to many interpretations after all. Shias and Sunnis are more united by religion than divided by interpretation. Islam has also been a uniting force for Kurds and Arabs. This is not something that occupiers wished to encourage. The occupiers adopted a policy of divide and rule. The US had only one post-war scenario, and it was based on pitting Sunni against Shia.
The moment the occupation was complete, the countdown to civil war began. The media spoke of parallels between Lebanon and Iraq. And every single incident in the country was portrayed as having sectarian origins. Meanwhile, the country became a stage for account settling. Anyone with an axe to grind -- Iran, Syria, Al-Qaeda, to mention just a few -- got involved. Israel, many claim, has been involved in the assassination of the country's top professionals.
As the violence spread, it became harder to draw the line between legitimate resistance and acts of wilful mayhem. Terrorists chose their targets in cold blood. Their aim was to divide the Iraqis, to drive a wedge between Sunni and Shia, and to bring the country to its knees. The turbulence in Al-Madaen and the bombings of the Shia mausoleums were not random acts; people who don't want the Iraqis to remain united carefully planned them.
Do we have a civil war in Iraq? To this moment, the answer is no. Rampant violence? Yes. Innocent victims? Certainly. Political vacuum? Without doubt. But no civil war. Iraqi politics is being mishandled, for our politicians have so far failed to step up to their responsibilities. Iraq needs leaders who can reassure the public and keep the nation together. Neighbours can help by encouraging unity rather than sedition. The US has taken us down a road of sectarian strife and now its troops are standing by, waiting to see what's next. This doesn't look good. The scene of political division is quite alarming. The scene of leaders jockeying for power is actually dismal. It's been two months since the elections, and yet we cannot get a government together. What we have in this country is not civil war, but a lack of credible leadership. We all are aware of the plots against our country, and some of our best minds have already advised caution and restraint. What we need to do is defuse the situation. We know that regional and international powers are trying to divide us, and we need to prove them wrong. We need to rebuild this country. We can do it. We can present an Iraqi model, just as the Americans said. We can offer a model of democracy, freedom and human rights. It's all up to us."Divide and rule by Sawsan Al-Assaf 16 - 22 March 2006"Is Iraq heading toward disintegration? The question is asked frequently by observers, never mind their attitude toward Iraq and Iraqis. The question implies more fundamental ones: is Iraq an artificial state? Or is it built on certain necessary foundations? If these foundations are no longer valid, should Iraq disintegrate?Iraq as a state and a civilization has existed well back in history. Deep-rooted civilizations, be they in the north, middle or south, came into being not because some power interest required them to but as a result of natural evolution. Even in modern history, when the Ottoman Empire introduced the villayet system it could not separate the three villayets of Mosul, Baghdad and Basra. Indeed, the British occupation formed the new Iraqi state according to these lines after cutting out some of its territories. One should remember that after signing the Sykes-Picot treaty, the British found that it was not realistic and changed their minds. This was not an accidental decision. The British strategists and political officers who controlled Iraq found that for economic and strategic reasons Iraq should be formed in the way it was. They realized that the north of Iraq could not subsist without the riches of the south and the south could not be defended without the natural boundaries of the north. I believe all these factors are still valid today........"Not because of our blue eyes by Saad N. Jawad, March 30, 2006And the third one fits the Arabic proverb: "The worst aspect of a tragedy .. is that it induces humor So, who’s responsible for the current violence in Iraq? Who’s responsible for Americans’ disdain of the war? Depends on who you talk to. Rumsfeld blames the U.S. press for not reporting more happy stories. Cheney cites the Iraq-al Qaeda connection which led up to 9/11 to justify the invasion. (He’s obviously been inhaling gunpowder, again.) Perhaps Bush has the freshest take on who to pin the blame on: Saddam Hussein. Ayup. This is all Saddam’s fault.Speaking, last week, before Freedom House, Bush was delusional even by his standards. “The enemies of a free Iraq are employing the same tactics Saddam used, killing and terrorizing the Iraqi people in an effort to foment sectarian division,” Bush declared.
Uh, no. But, oh, Hell. The facts be damned.
“Iraq is a nation that is physically and emotionally scarred by three decades of Saddam’s tyranny,” Bush felt compelled to blurt.
Bush put rose-colored glasses on his “straw-man” argument and let ‘er rip: “Today, some Americans ask whether removing Saddam caused the divisions and instability we’re now seeing. In fact, much of the animosity and violence we now see is the legacy of Saddam Hussein. He is a tyrant who exacerbated sectarian divisions to keep himself in power. Iraq is a nation with many ethnic and religious and sectarian and regional and tribal divisions. Before Saddam Hussein, Iraqis from different communities managed to live together. Even today, many Iraqi tribes have both Sunni and Shia branches. And in many small towns with mixed populations, there’s often only one mosque where Sunni and Shia worship together. Intermarriage is also common with mixed families that include Arabs and Kurds and Sunnis and Shia and Turkmen, Assyrians, and Chaldeans.”
He’s been reading “The Arabian Nights” again as history.
Although he admitted “The kidnappings and brutal executions and beheadings are very disturbing,” (‘ya think?) he thought we were making great progress.
Then, assuming the role of School Marm-in-Chief, he admonished the current Iraqi government: “I want the Iraqi people to hear I’ve got great confidence in their capacity to self govern,” Bush said. “I also want the Iraqi people to hear — it’s about time you get a unity government going. In other words, Americans understand you’re newcomers to the political arena. But pretty soon its time to shut her down and get governing (sic)......”Sugar plumbs and depleted uranium March 31, 2006See the videos on Bush's "
