UnQana - "Going from a union of nations to a bunch of gravediggers"
.
"I woke up this morning to scenes of carnage and destruction on the television and for the briefest of moments, I thought it was footage of Iraq. It took me a few seconds to realize it was actually Qana in Lebanon. The latest village to see Israeli air strikes. The images were beyond gruesome- body parts and corpses being hauled out from under tons of debris. Wailing relatives and friends, searching for loved ones… So far, according to humanitarian organizations, 34 were children. They killed them while they were sleeping inside their bomb shelters- much like the Amriya Shelter massacre in 1991.We saw the corpses of the children on television, lifeless and twisted grotesquely, what remained of their faces frozen in expressions of pain and shock. I just sat there and cried in front of the television. I didn’t know I could still feel that sort of sorrow towards what has become a daily reality for Iraqis. It’s not Iraq but it might as well be: It’s civilians under lethal attack; it’s a country fighting occupation.I’m so frustrated I can’t think straight. I’m full of rage against Israel, the US, Britain, Iran and most of Europe. The world is going to go to hell for standing by and allowing the massacre of innocents. For God’s sake, 34 children???
The UN is beyond useless. They’ve gone from a union of nations working for the good of the world (if they ever were even that), to a bunch of gravediggers. (added emphasis) They’re only good for digging mangled bodies out of the ruins of buildings and helping to identify and put them into mass graves. They won’t stop a massacre- they won’t even speak out against it- they’ll just come by and help clean up the mess. Are the lives of Arabs worth so little? If this had happened in the US or UK or France or China, somebody would already have dropped a nuclear bomb… How is this happening?"Qana Massacre... Riverbend, July 30, 2006"54 Lebanese civilians, including 37 children, will killed in an Israeli Air Force strike on a 3-story building in the city of Qana in south Lebanon on July 30. Yesha Rabbinical Council: During time of war, enemy has no innocents
The Yesha Rabbinical Council announced in response to an IDF attack in Kfar Qanna that "according to Jewish law, during a time of battle and war, there is no such term as 'innocents' of the enemy."
All of the discussions on Christian morality are weakening the spirit of the army and the nation and are costing us in the blood of our soldiers and civilians," the statement said. (Efrat Weiss)Settler Rabbis: Jewish law permits Qana carnage July 30, 2006

Hizbullah ...
Kidnapping Israeli Soldiers is a duty speech by Hassan nasrallah on Novemebr 25, 2005 (and other related speeches by Hizbullah's Hassan Nasarallah) July 26, 2006On the martydom of Hassan Nasrallah's son in 1997 ... 1997"Israeli soldiers returning from the front in Lebanon talk of battling an intelligent, well-prepared and ruthless guerrilla army whose fighters don't seem to fear death.
The troops describe Hezbollah guerrillas hiding among civilians and in underground bunkers two or three stories deep - evidence, they say, that Hezbollah has been planning this battle for many years."It's hard to beat them," one soldier said.
"They're not afraid of anything."
The soldiers, most of whom declined to give their names under orders from superiors, described exchanges of gunfire in between houses on village streets, with Hezbollah guerrillas sometimes popping out of bushes to fire Kalashnikovs, rocket-propelled grenades and anti-tank missiles.

Speeches of Hizbullah's Hassan Nasrallah ...
.
UPDATE: More speches
.
.
These are excerpts from Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah television address broadcast on Wednesday 9 August, 2006. .
.
Video of Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah's speech on July 25, 2006Excerpt: "Today, the basis upon which the war was launched and planned was to return Lebanon to the circle of the US-Israeli control and hegemony. This is worse than the 1982 invasion and the 17-May agreement. They want to extract Lebanon entirely out of its history, commitment, culture and real identity to become a Zionist and American country with American facades that would only obey and implement without any power. .... At this point, I wish to move to the issue of the battlefield. After all this time and after this entire extremism of the Israeli enemy, we realized that we have entered the stage of Haifa. But now I would like to declare that we entered the after-Haifa stage. Consequently, there is a new phase of challenge and conflict which the enemy imposes on us as an inescapable choice for the new stage. Yes, the boundaries of Haifa will not be the boundaries of our bombardment regardless of the reactions of the enemy forces. We will move on to the after-Haifa stage. After that, we will decide on the time when to move to the after-after-Haifa stage, depending on the developments. (emphasis added)"

"One Western journalist spent days scouring the south Lebanese port city of Tyre and the surrounding villages for a sign of the militants who triggered the Israeli assault, but came up empty.
Then, two men showed up at his seafront hotel. He had asked too many questions, they said. He would have to return to Beirut. The journalist in question asked not to be identified fearing Hezbollah retaliation.
"This is their counter intelligence. They have a very effective local networks who report every thing that is going on," says Goksel, the former UN advisor.
An ice cream vendor in downtown Tyre simply shrugs his shoulders when asked about the shadowy organization. He knows they are around, he says, but no one knows where.
"Even during peaceful times we never see them anywhere," says Ali Mohammed, 56. "They are a part of the people. We don't know who is Hezbollah and who is not. It could be you or me."

The real price of selling 'American Democracy' to Iraqis ...
.
"Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean on Wednesday called Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki an "anti-Semite" and criticized President Bush for inviting the newly-elected leader of Iraq to the United States.
"The president made a big deal about bringing the Iraqi prime minister to address Congress and met with him yesterday. The Iraqi prime minister is an anti-Semite. We don't need to spend $200 and $300 and $500 billion dollars bringing democracy to Iraq to turn it over to people who believe Israel doesn't have the right to defend itself and to refuse to condemn Hezbollah," Dean told the Democratic Professionals Forum in West Palm Beach, Fla."Dean Calls Iraqi Prime Minister Anti-Semite, Criticizes Bush For U.S. Visit July 26, 2006.

Holding the whole people of a country as hostages for ransom
.
Lebanon After Two Weeks ....
From Juan Cole July 26, 2006"Update: Hizbullah fighters defending Bint Jbeil have killed 14 Israeli soldiers, according to early reports on Wednesday. Hizbullah is ratcheting up its kill ratio with the Israeli military toward 1:1, something no other Arab fighting force has even approached.Philip Gordon relays the thinking of the Israeli political and military elite behind its inhuman and massive bombing of all Lebanon:
' According to retired Israeli army Col. Gal Luft, the goal of the campaign is to "create a rift between the Lebanese population and Hezbollah supporters." The message to Lebanon's elite, he said, is this: "If you want your air conditioning to work and if you want to be able to fly to Paris for shopping, you must pull your head out of the sand and take action toward shutting down Hezbollah-land." ' In other words, Zbig was right that the Israelis have kidnapped the 3.8 million Lebanese and are holding them all for ranson, while breaking their legs from time to time to encourage prompt payment. The horrible thing is that the Lebanese could not do anything about Hizbullah if they wanted to. Their government is weak and divided (Hizbullah is in it, and the Bush administration and Ambassador Mark Feltman signed off on that!) Their new, green army only has 60,000 men, and a lot of them are Shiites who would not fight Hizbullah. Lebanon was a patient that needed to be nurtured carefully to health. Instead, it has been drafted and put into the middle of the worst fighting on the battlefield. Then there is this: ' Brigadier General Dan Halutz, the Israeli Chief of Staff, emphasised that the offensive . . . was open-ended. “Nothing is safe (in Lebanon), as simple as that,” he said. 'In other words, Halutz, who is also said to have threatened ten for one reprisals, is openly declaring that he will commit war crimes if he wants to. Nothing is safe? A Christian school in the northern village of Bsharri? A Druze old people's home in the Shouf mountains? A Sunni family out for a stroll in the northern port of Tripoli? He can murder all of them at will, Halutz says. And Luft gives us the rationale. If these Lebanese civilians aren't curbing Hizbullah for Israel, they just aren't going to be enjoying their lives. They are a nation of hostages until such time as they have properly developed Stockholm syndrome and begin thanking the Israelis for their tender mercies."

.
Feldman, Noah : The architect of 'Liberated' Iraq's Swiss cheese constitution..
“For its part, Israel is gambling that the right strategy is to make the people who elected Hamas and a government that includes Hezbollah reckon the costs of their representatives’ recklessness. That is why Israel has targeted not only Hezbollah leaders and strongholds but has also bombed infrastructure that sustains daily life for everybody in Lebanon".
.
Is that reciprocal? Should those suffering from the American elected president's reckless war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan, have the right to 'target' American infrastructure and civilians, as well as their elected leaders?
.
.

"For Dershowitz, a Jewish grade schooler killed by a Katyusha is more important and worthy of compassion than his or her counterpart in a Lebanese village where Hezbollah may operate.
.
"Both are technically civilians, but the former is far more innocent than the latter…. These differences and others are conflated within the increasingly meaningless word 'civilian’—a word that carried great significance when uniformed armies fought other uniformed armies on battlefields far from civilian population centers. Today this same word equates the truly innocent with guilty accessories to terrorism."
.

"Under questioning from presenter Jon Snow of Channel Four news on the reasons behind Israel's bombing of Gaza's only power station -- thereby cutting off electricity to more than half of the Strip's 1.3 million inhabitants for many months ahead, as well as threatening the water supply -- Zvi Ravner denied this action amounted to collective punishment of the civilian population. (emphasis added)
Rather, he claimed, the electricity station had to be disabled to prevent the soldier's captors from having the light needed to smuggle him out of Gaza at night.
It was left to a bemused Jon Snow to point out that smugglers usually prefer to do their work in the dark and that Israel's actions were more likely to assist his captors than disadvantage them".

Irreligious Questions ...

Sistani had issued the following announcement concerning the onslaught on Lebanon on July 16, 2006, calling upon "The world community needs to move on to stop the continuation of this flagrant aggression". There is not a single mention of the United States of America. .
The following are a few questions that might be posed to him (as he is an authority to respond):
.
- Who is supporting Israeli to the hilt militarily, financially, diplomatically and politically? - Who occupied Iraq?
- Who has forcefully wedged religious strife into the Iraqi society that is leading to the death of thousands of Iraqis every month as a consequence of it?
.
Hence,
.
- Who issued an edict in March 2003 exhorting the faithful "not to fight the American soldiersrs" who were in the process of occupying Iraq, and has not, till now, rescinded it? (It should be noted that all edicts, and only those issued after the occupation, are posted on the www.sistani.org site) - What will be the position of his eminence in the event that the conflict does expand to include an Israeli/American attack on Iran itself, as the neoconservatives and the Israeli government have been clamoring for? What will be the position of his eminence's religious/political parties? Will they defend those that are protecting them in the 'Green Zone' or scramble to assist their political mentors in Tehran?
.
These humble questions were posted to the sistani.org page where his eminence is hoped to answer them. They were posted under the section of "abortion". .
Is this how they hold new born babies?
Or is it this way?

Corner stones of Israel's terror
.
The plaque outside the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, which has incensed the British Ambassador. July 20, 2006
"They had a conference to mark the anniversary and tied themselves in semantic knots trying to find a difference between 'resistance’ and 'terror’. In the end, they decided they had been 'freedom fighters’ while the Arabs were always 'terrorists’".
Old possum, July 24, 2006
In the Beginning, There Was Terror. July-August, 2003
"Much of the history of terrorism in today’s Middle
East has been thrust down the Orwellian memory
hole due to the highly effective campaign over the
past 50 years to suppress information prejudicial to
Israel.
Blowing up a bus, a train, a ship, a café, or a hotel;
assassinating a diplomat or a peace negotiator; killing
hostages, sending letter bombs; massacring defenseless
villagers — this is terrorism, as we know it. In the
modern Middle East it began with the Zionists who
founded the Jewish state".
Israeli Massacres. "Although the Image that Israel distributes about herself is that of an oppressed nation, it is with heavy hearts that we present these crimes that stand for themselves for the brutality of the Israeli Army and the heartlessness of its soldiers". Details and Numbers (This list is up to 1999, many others since then, such as in Jenin and Lebanon are still to be added).

The ILL-LOGIC of Iraq
.As the civil war in Iraq has become more overt this past week, the administration would still tell us that we invaded a country three years ago and continue to fight, kill and die there, for good, sound reasons. But somehow those reasons oddly seem not to add up to anything that makes much sense. The illogic seems to permeate the war and the rhetoric surrounding it in so many ways. We offer but a few questions about the illogic of our invasion of Iraq and continued killing of its citizens, and our own Americans.1. Why is it that when insurgency attacks go down we are winning the war; but when they go up, the insurgency is desperate?
2. Why is it that if Iraqis are so pleased by their new democracy that we are so generally disliked there?
3. Why is it that in a country with so much oil in the ground that Iraqis cannot buy gasoline at any price and must fill their gas tanks after we do --- even when it's their oil?
4. Why do we say when insurgents bomb mosques that it is “intended to foment sectarian violence and civil war” -- when it already is sectarian violence and civil war?
5. Why is it that we are to honor those who died in Iraq, but our government and our media will not allow us to see those being honored in their flag-draped coffins?
6. Why do we support the Iraqi government and praise them as saviors and bastions of freedom, when they allow their country to be dominated by a foreign invader?
7. Why is the future U.S. Embassy in Iraq the only major construction project that is going well there?
8. Why does the Administration oppose religious control in Iraq but embraces it in our country?
9. Why is freedom to vote and have public discourse more important than freedom from crime, hunger, and disease?
10. Why when “they” kill innocent women and children, it is a matter for outrage, but when we do it, it is “collateral damage” or just part of the price of “liberty?”
11. Why do many U.S. citizens want to end the war because about 2,600 Americans have been killed, rather than because many thousands of Iraqis have been killed?
12. Why do we send more soldiers to be wrongly killed so that previous soldiers did not "die in vain."? Do we honor those killed by drunk drivers by sending more drunk drivers on the road to kill further?

"You raped the country, why not the people?"
."... In the news they're estimating her age to be around 24, but Iraqis from the area say she was only 14. (Comment: She is 14 as shown by her Identification Card shown here. Source - Iraq Patrol)
Fourteen. Imagine your 14-year-old sister or your 14-year-old daughter. Imagine her being gang-raped by a group of psychopaths and then the girl was killed and her body burned to cover up the rape. Finally, her parents and her five-year-old sister were also killed.
Hail the American heroes... Raise your heads high supporters of the 'liberation' - your troops have made you proud today.
I don't believe the troops should be tried in American courts. I believe they should be handed over to the people in the area and only then will justice be properly served. And our ass of a PM, Nouri Al-Maliki, is requesting an 'independent investigation', ensconced safely in his American guarded compound because it wasn't his daughter or sister who was raped, probably tortured and killed. His family is abroad safe from the hands of furious Iraqis and psychotic American troops.
It fills me with rage to hear about it and read about it. The pity I once had for foreign troops in Iraq is gone. It's been eradicated by the atrocities in Abu Ghraib, the deaths in Haditha and the latest news of rapes and killings. I look at them in their armored vehicles and to be honest- I can't bring myself to care whether they are 19 or 39. I can't bring myself to care if they make it back home alive. I can't bring myself to care anymore about the wife or parents or children they left behind. I can't bring myself to care because it's difficult to see beyond the horrors. I look at them and wonder just how many innocents they killed and how many more they'll kill before they go home. How many more young Iraqi girls will they rape? (emphasis added)
Why don't the Americans just go home? They've done enough damage and we hear talk of how things will fall apart in Iraq if they 'cut and run', but the fact is that they aren't doing anything right now. How much worse can it get? People are being killed in the streets and in their own homes- what's being done about it? Nothing. It's convenient for them- Iraqis can kill each other and they can sit by and watch the bloodshed- unless they want to join in with murder and rape." Atrocities... by Riverbend July 11, 2006A year and a half ago, there was another equally gruesome rape incident, not much reported on, of an Iraqi woman prisoner in Abu Ghraib prison, FATIMA, who wrote this letter (in English and بالعربي) to the Iraqi Resistance:"… I say to you: our wombs have been filled with the children of fornication by those sons of apes and pigs who raped us. Or I could tell you that they have defaced our bodies, spit in our faces, and tore up the little copies of the Qur’an that hung around our necks? ….By God, we have not passed one night since we have been in prison without one of the apes and pigs jumping down upon us to rip our bodies apart with his overweening lust. Kill us along with them! Destroy us along with them! Don’t leave us here to let them get pleasure from raping us
….Leave their tanks and aircraft outside. Come at us here in the prison of Abu Ghurayb. They raped me on one day more than nine times. Can you comprehend? Imagine one of your sisters being raped. Why can’t you all imagine it, as I am your sister. With me are 13 girls, all unmarried. All have been raped before the eyes and ears of everyone. They took our clothes and won’t let us get dressed. As I write this letter one of the girls has committed suicide. She was savagely raped. A soldier hit her on her chest and thigh after raping her. He subjected her to unbelievable torture. She beat her head against the wall of the cell until she died, for she couldn’t take any more.Brothers, I tell you again, fear God! Kill us with them so that we might be at peace. Help! Help! Help!"Fatima is martyred ... Fatima's name lives... and the 'bravery' of US soldiers posted here on January 10, 2005 (unfortunately, some of the links mentioned in this old posting are no longer accessible, hence, I am posting some of the archived ones, such as Fatima's letter, from my site)The concerted attack on Abu Ghraib prison by tens of Iraqi and Arab Resistance fighters, in response to FATIMA's letter that is mentioned in the above posting and which led to at least 20 American dead and 50 injured, was spearheaded by a Saudi suicide martyr who betrothed Fatima while she was still in prison (large video file, 37MB).... The pathetic cosmetics of the "Ugly American's" war crimes in Iraq
In an earlier posting, "the Ugly American is schizophrenic"
on October 2, 2005, mention was accorded to a book written in 1958 by two Americans who coined the very apt term, "The Ugly American". The book, at that time, was renowned for its slashing exposé of American arrogance, incompetence, and corruption in Southeast Asia. Vietnam's bloody orgy proved the book's point of view a few years later as the American military bombed that country to near oblivion till the American's defeat in the seventies.
Yet, having been mashed through the mental and moral Vietnam grinder, the American sheeple (sheep + people) were yet again led by the nose into decimating Iraq with their tax dollars after ingesting a heavy dose of government lies dished to them by the Corporate Media laxative. They readily excreted the wrenching Vietnam debacle from their conscious.
As their own American Ugliness stared them, yet again from Iraq, straight in the face, they resorted to threadbare cosmetics, too little too late. Note the glaring contradictions/inconsistencies in these reports:"Former Marine Col. Thomas X. Hammes, an expert on insurgent warfare, said a lack of accountability in cases involving the mistreatment of civilians by U.S. personnel — particularly at the Abu Ghraib prison — helped fuel the insurgency by creating a source of frustration among ordinary Iraqis. He praised efforts to promote greater accountability among senior officers, saying it would help fight the war in Iraq."To date, we've been very, very poor at holding our people accountable," Hammes said. "Anything that … emphasizes the responsibility up the chain of command is a positive step. It certainly will help our troops on the ground."Marines Getting a New Message July 9, 2006"Americans are far more socially isolated today than they were two decades ago, and a sharply growing number of people say they have no one in whom they can confide, according to a comprehensive new evaluation of the decline of social ties in the United States.
A quarter of Americans say they have no one with whom they can discuss personal troubles, more than double the number who were similarly isolated in 1985. Overall, the number of people Americans have in their closest circle of confidants has dropped from around three to about two.The comprehensive new study paints a sobering picture of an increasingly fragmented America, where intimate social ties -- once seen as an integral part of daily life and associated with a host of psychological and civic benefits -- are shrinking or nonexistent. In bad times, far more people appear to suffer alone.Social Isolation Growing in U.S., Study Says June 23, 2006
"A decade after the Pentagon declared a zero-tolerance policy for racist hate groups, recruiting shortfalls caused by the war in Iraq have allowed "large numbers of neo-Nazis and skinhead extremists" to infiltrate the military, according to a watchdog organization.
The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks racist and right-wing militia groups, estimated that the numbers could run into the thousands, citing interviews with Defense Department investigators and reports and postings on racist Web sites and magazines."We've got Aryan Nations graffiti in Baghdad," the group quoted a Defense Department investigator as saying in a report to be posted today on its Web site, http://www.splcenter.org/. "That's a problem." .... The groups are being abetted, the report said, by pressure on recruiters, particularly for the Army, to meet quotas that are more difficult to reach because of the growing unpopularity of the war in Iraq."Hate Groups Are Infiltrating the Military, Group Asserts July 7, 2006"Lt. Thomas Tompkins had a decision to make. His unit had come under fire from a band of insurgents, who had just fled for cover in a mosque.
Strictly speaking, the rules of engagement allowed Lieutenant Tompkins to storm the front door and spread through the mosque in search of the enemy. But there was another option, it turned out: Knock on the door and talk to the imam.Tompkins's test came not in the furnace of Baghdad or Baquba, but in a quiet classroom exercise on the lush countryside campus of Marine Corps Base Quantico. The lesson is one example of the US military's efforts to instill in troops the notion that - in a war where support from the local populace is as important as raids and airstrikes - cultural awareness can be an effective weapon. As the Marines' "center of excellence" for culture and language, the year-old center is charged with spreading cultural understanding - of lands wherever marines are deployed - into all levels of its forces education, training, and operations. Likewise, the Army has opened a similar "center of excellence" for cultural training at Fort Huachuca in Arizona."What US wants in its troops: cultural savvy July 5, 2006Two and a half years ago, my 16 years old (at the time) daughter, Nofa Khadduri, had instinctively wrote the following (had only the top brass of these 'centres of excellence' noted):
".....
Though it is a long road to gain the trust of the Iraqi people, it is not a very difficult process. Here is a suggestion that the American government might consider: the government is sending pop stars to perform concerts for American soldiers in Iraq so the soldiers do not feel very isolated from their home country. Would it hurt to save the cost of the travel and accommodation of those pop artists and print out a pamphlet outlining the Do's and Don'ts in Iraqi culture?
After all, the soldiers will be definitely staying longer than originally expected, and there is no way to stop the feeling of isolation by bringing bits and pieces of their culture to them. The American government might as well make the stay of their soldiers more palatable by giving them some pointers on how to fit in where they are; they are going to have to do it if they are expecting any cooperation from Iraqi citizens.
If the American government would only understand that it is nearly impossible to destroy Iraq's culture, beliefs and way of life, then working toward a democracy would be much easier. There would be a lot of Iraqi and American blood saved. Was that not the whole point of this war: to stop terrorism? Or was it the weapons of mass destruction? Or was it the connection with al-Qaeda? Maybe it was oil, or maybe... Well, I lost track of all the reasons for this war, as did most of the world."
Iraqi teenager appeals to Americans to understand Iraqis: Would it hurt them to try? (2)
February 9, 2004But then, the force majeure of the "American Way" is:""If you're not willing to kill civilians, or to assume that there is a likelihood that innocents are going to be killed, you have no business fighting an insurgency - because you can't win," he (Mike Scheuer, who headed the CIA unit charged with capturing Osama Bin Laden in the late 1990s) said."US 'too wary of Iraq casualties' July 8, 2006(Comment: The definition of a Terrorist: "a terrorist is someone who consciously targets innocent civilians in a quest for political ends".)"After famously telling reporters that they "don't do body counts," Pentagon officials now say that they have in fact been keeping a record of civilian casualties in Iraq for one year. And while that number remains classified, independent estimates suggest that at least 50,000 people have died in the country since the 2003 invasion."50,000 Dead, But Who's Counting? July 8, 2006"Question: How much is an Iraqi life worth? Answer: A lot less than an American or British life, according to the amount of compensation paid to the relatives of victims.
.... In the early months of the invasion, the United States paid Iraqis $106,000 for 176 claims - averaging about $600 per claim.
During the siege of Fallujah, where US soldiers killed 18 people and wounded 78 during an April 2004 firefight, the American military commander in the area paid $1,500 for each fatality and $500 for each injury.
More recently the US paid $38,000 for Haditha victims' family members. That comes up to less than $1,600 per person killed. What a bargain.
The most any Iraqi has received to date for injury or property damage is $15,000.
By comparison, the Libyan government recently settled a lawsuit for victims of Pan Am 103, which was blown up over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988. The Libyans paid $2.7 billion for 270 passengers with an average payment of $10 million per death. Shortly after the war with Iraq, the Bush administration pressed for legislation to double the death benefits paid to the families of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan to $500,000.Last year a Seattle woman was awarded $45,000 for the wrongful death of her cat."Are all lives equal? Not according to the way the US compensates victims July 3, 2006
On another note, the discrepancy between the number of killed American soldiers that are officially announced by DoD and CentCom (2544 as of July 10, 2006) and the higher numbers that are claimed by the Iraqi Resistance reports that quote eye witnesses and filmed video clips of IED attacks, one explanation might very well be that there are hundreds who are serving with the American occupation forces who are not American civilians. These freelancers are wearing US military uniforms but aren't really Americans (their families are overseas) so their deaths won't be reported by CentCom. Note what occurs every year in occupied Iraq and Afghanistan: -"More than 100 service members serving in Iraq and Afghanistan became the newest American citizens in naturalization ceremonies on Independence Day. In Afghanistan, 27 Soldiers from 17 countries took the oath of citizenship. In Iraq, 75 service members from 29 countries also took the oath." Deployed Soldiers become U.S. citizens on Independence Day July 5, 2006
- "CAMP VICTORY , Iraq -- One hundred forty-three candidates from 42 different countries held up their right hands during a U.S. Army and Citizenship and Immigration Services-led ceremony in the Al-Faw Palace rotunda July 25." Naturalization ceremony held at Victory July 25, 2005

The effective antidote to occupation
.
An Islam Memo correspondent reported on July 6, 2006 that Jaish Al-Mujahedeen (The Mujahedeen Army) Iraqi Resistance fighters have downed first (in Arabic) and then a second (in Arabic) Apache helicopters with Strela surface to air missiles near the village of Zour north of Muqdadia within a 15 minutes interval. For Iraqis, the Anglo-American occupation means destruction, rape and pillage
.
.
.
"
A'beer Qassim al-Janaby, a 15-year-old Iraqi girl, was with her family in Mahmudiyah, 20 miles south of Baghdad, when US troops raided the house. A group of soldiers have been charged with her rape and the murder of her father, mother, and nine-year-old sister. They are also accused of setting A'beer's body on fire.
The al-Janaby family lived near a US checkpoint, and the killings happened at 2pm on March 11. As usual, a US spokesman ascribed the killings to "Sunni Arab insurgents active in the area", contrary to local eyewitnesses.
A'beer's rape and murder (in Arabic) is neither incidental nor the product of a US soldier's "pe
rsonality disorder": it is part of a pattern that includes Abu Ghraib, as well as the Haditha, Ishaqi and Qaiem massacres. And we see this pattern as serving a strategic function beyond indiscriminate revenge: to couple collective humiliation with intimidation and terror.
Today, four years into the Anglo-American occupation, the whole of Iraq has become Abu Ghraib, with our streets as prison corridors and homes as cells. Iraqis are attacked in detention, on the streets and in their homes.
It took almost a year, and published photographs of horrific torture in Abu Ghraib, before the world began to heed the voices of the detainees and those trying to defend them. The same is happening to women victims.
Abuses, torture and the rape of Iraqi women have been reported for three years now by independent Iraqi organisations. But the racist logic of occupation means that occupied people are not to be trusted, and truth is the private ownership of the occupiers.
Families of the abused, raped, and killed Iraqi civilians have to wait for months, if not years, until a US soldier comes forward to admit responsibility and the US military begins an investigation. (For the US military to investigate a US soldier's crime has been seen by Iraqis as the killers investigating their own technical skills.)
On the October 19 2005, Freedom Voice, an Iraqi Human Rights society, reported the rape of three women from the "Saad Bin Abi Waqqas neighbourhood" in Tell Afar after a US raid.
The alleged rape took place by soldiers inside the women's own house after the arrest of their male relatives. Medical sources in the town said one of the women died. A US commander ordered some soldiers detained, and no more was heard of this.
Immunity from prosecution under Iraqi or international law is the main fact of the occupation and renders laughable any claims of sovereignty. It is based on UN security council resolution 1546 and the accompanying exchange of letters between Iraqi and American authorities. This immunity applies equally to the marine units accused of roaming our streets high on drugs and to advisers running ministries, to prison guards, security guards, multinational forces and corporate contractors of all kinds.
The Iraqi women's ordeal began the moment occupation forces descended upon them. Most arrests and raids take place after midnight. In some neighborhoods, women now sleep fully dressed so as not to be caught in their nightgowns. Armoured cars and helicopters are sometimes deployed in raids, in a variant on "shock and awe". Troops force women and children to watch as they deliberately humiliate their husbands, sons or fathers, and sometimes order them to take pictures with US soldiers' cameras. Money and jewellery are taken. Are these "terrorist assets confiscated" or spoils of war?
Random arrests, rapes and killings by the occupation forces continue under the so-called "national unity government", which renewed their mandate and immunity while at the same time talking of a "national reconciliation initiative".
Despite all the rhetoric, a female minister for human rights and dozens of US-funded Iraqi women's organisations, the only outcry we have heard condemning the rape of A' beer and the plight of Iraqi women under occupation is from the anti-occupation Islamist movement.
Occupation authorities and their puppet regime share the denial of violence against women. After the sexual abuse scandal at Abu Ghraib, the authorities talked about respecting local traditions, and the need to avoid provoking anger and give the Iraqi people the sense that the occupation recognises the sensitive status of women.
On occasion, Iraqi collaborators joined in. On April 18 2004, the ministry of interior chief, Ahmed Youssef, issued a statement denying maltreatment of female detainees. He said: "We are Muslims. We know very well how to treat our female detainees." As if violence against women were not a universal crime.
The abuses continue also in the puppet regime's prisons. On October 20 2005, officials of the Kazemiya women's prison reported an instance of rape. The UN was refused permission to investigate. According to a report of the UN assistance mission to Iraq, Iraqi police tortured a woman who had been detained in Diwaniya police station since March 2005. The victim recounted that electric shocks were applied to her heels. She was reportedly told her teenage daughter would be raped if she did not supply the information her interrogators wanted.
A report published by the Iraqi National Association for Human Rights on October 29 2005 found that women held in interior ministry detention centres are subject to numerous human rights violations, including "systematic rape by the investigators and ... other forms of bodily harm in order to coerce them into making confessions". The report added that prisons fail to meet even the most basic standards of hygiene, and that the women were deprived of facilities as fundamental as toilets. The ministry of justice has confirmed the accuracy of the report.
The wall of denial is cracking. On June 12, al-Jazeera showed footage of Mohammed al-Diaeny, a member of parliament, going to a prison in Baquba, near Baghdad, where men showed evidence of torture and talked of being raped. Seven women detainees were shown but refused to talk. "Too ashamed", whispered one of them. In response, Jawad al-Bolani, minister of the interior, promised investigation. He later vowed to release all women prisoners and negotiate with the multinational forces to release theirs.
There will be no end to these violations as long as Iraq remains occupied by forces that enjoy immunity from prosecution under Iraqi law and as long as the occupation authorities continue to treat Iraqi citizens with racist contempt in order to feel better about plundering the nation's wealth and depriving its people of their most fundamental rights under international law and human rights conventions.
The Iraqi puppet regime's promises and US investigations of the "personality disorders" of their soldiers and the "few bad apples" are irrelevant for Iraqis: for them, the Anglo-American occupation means destruction, rape and pillage."All Iraq is Abu Ghraib by Haifa Zangana July 5, 2006Updates:.
"The slayings of three soldiers near the site of an alleged rape and the killing of a family may have been an act of revenge, an official says."
.
(My Comment: It is not a 'may'; IT DAMN WELL IS! It took the American 'experts' two weeks to figure that out? When will it hit them that that they cannot defeat the Iraqi Resistance? 5,000 dead US soldiers?)
.
"In reality both Abu Ghraib and Haditha were merely more extreme versions of the day-to-day workings of the American occupation in Iraq, and what makes them unique is not so much how bad they were, or how embarrassing, but the fact that they made their way to the media and were publicized despite attempts to cover them up. Focusing on Abu Ghraib and Haditha distracts us from the daily, little Abu Ghraibs and small-scale Hadithas that have made up the occupation. The occupation has been one vast extended crime against the Iraqi people, and most of it has occurred unnoticed by the American people and the media. "
"At least 50,000 Iraqis have died violently since the 2003 US-led invasion, according to statistics from the Baghdad morgue, the Iraqi Health Ministry and other agencies - a toll 20,000 higher than previously acknowledged by the Bush administration. Higher than the US estimate, but thought to be undercounted, the tally is equivalent to 570,000 Americans killed in three years."

PS:
Islam Memo correspondent reported on July 6, 2006 that Jaish Al-Mujahedeen Iraqi Resistance fighters have downed first (in Arabic) and then second (in Arabic) Apatche helicopters with surface to air missiles near the village of Zour north of Muqdadia within a 15 minutes interval. Some of the victims of the 'Iraqi' Interior Ministry ....
.
This is
a gruesome video of some of the victims of the Interior Ministry's militias, with recorded voice documentation (in Arabic) of their names and ages, as they are collected from the morgue.
Update:"Baghdad's central morgue received 1,595 bodies last month, the most since the bombing of a Shia shrine in February prompted a wave of sectarian killings.
Doctor Abdul Razzaq al-Obaidi, the morgue assistant manager, said on Wednesday that the tally for June compared with the 1,375 bodies the morgue received in May and 1,155 in April."
