Update:
Olbermann: Special Comment on Bush Speech January 12, 2007

"... what happened on January 10, 1967 ...

The big news story that night? President Lyndon B. Johnson's State of the Union address.

The topic that dominated all others: Vietnam.

I'm going to guide you to some excerpts of that address -- exactly 40 years ago tonight.
See how it compares to some of the excerpts from President Bush's speech that were just released minutes ago:

LBJ, Jan. 10, 1967: We have chosen to fight a limited war in Vietnam in an attempt to prevent a larger war--a war almost certain to follow, I believe, if the Communists succeed in overrunning and taking over South Vietnam by aggression and by force. I believe, and I am supported by some authority, that if they are not checked now the world can expect to pay a greater price to check them later.
GWB, Jan. 10, 2007: Tonight in Iraq, the Armed Forces of the United States are engaged in a struggle that will determine the direction of the global war on terror – and our safety here at home. The new strategy I outline tonight will change America's course in Iraq, and help us succeed in the fight against terror.

LBJ, Jan. 10, 1967: I wish I could report to you that the conflict is almost over. This I cannot do. We face more cost, more loss, and more agony. For the end is not yet. I cannot promise you that it will come this year--or come next year. Our adversary still believes, I think, tonight, that he can go on fighting longer than we can, and longer than we and our allies will be prepared to stand up and resist.
GWB, Jan. 10, 2007: Our past efforts to secure Baghdad failed for two principal reasons: There were not enough Iraqi and American troops to secure neighborhoods that had been cleared of terrorists and insurgents. And there were too many restrictions on the troops we did have.

LBJ, Jan. 10, 1967: Our South Vietnamese allies are also being tested tonight. Because they must provide real security to the people living in the countryside. And this means reducing the terrorism and the armed attacks which kidnaped and killed 26,900 civilians in the last 32 months, to levels where they can be successfully controlled by the regular South Vietnamese security forces. It means bringing to the villagers an effective civilian government that they can respect, and that they can rely upon and that they can participate in, and that they can have a personal stake in. We hope that government is now beginning to emerge.
GWB, Jan. 10, 2007: Only the Iraqis can end the sectarian violence and secure their people. And their government has put forward an aggressive plan to do it.

LBJ, Jan. 10, 1967: This forward movement is rooted in the ambitions and the interests of Asian nations themselves. It was precisely this movement that we hoped to accelerate when I spoke at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore in April 1965, and I pledged "a much more massive effort to improve the life of man" in that part of the world, in the hope that we could take some of the funds that we were spending on bullets and bombs and spend it on schools and production.

GWB, Jan. 10, 2007: A successful strategy for Iraq goes beyond military operations. Ordinary Iraqi citizens must see that military operations are accompanied by visible improvements in their neighborhoods and communities. So America will hold the Iraqi government to the benchmarks it has announced.

GWB, Jan. 10, 2007: The challenge playing out across the broader Middle East is more than a military conflict. It is the decisive ideological struggle of our time…In the long run, the most realistic way to protect the American people is to provide a hopeful alternative to the hateful ideology of the enemy – by advancing liberty across a troubled region.

LBJ, Jan. 10, 1967: A time of testing--yes. And a time of transition. The transition is sometimes slow; sometimes unpopular; almost always very painful; and often quite dangerous. But we have lived with danger for a long time before, and we shall live with it for a long time yet to come. We know that "man is born unto trouble." We also know that this Nation was not forged and did not survive and grow and prosper without a great deal of sacrifice from a great many men.
GWB, Jan. 10, 2007: Victory will not look like the ones our fathers and grandfathers achieved. There will be no surrender ceremony on the deck of a battleship…A democratic Iraq will not be perfect. But it will be a country that fights terrorists instead of harboring them – and it will help bring a future of peace and security for our children and grandchildren.

Not much to add here -- the words of Lyndon Johnson and George W. Bush pretty much speak for themselves.

Two things, though.

First of all,
only 7,917 American troop had died in Vietnam through the end of 1966, or ten days before Johnson's speech. From the beginning of 1967 though the end of the war, an addition 50,285 -- more than six times as many -- Americans would lose their lives.

Also, and we're not endorsing this action by any means, then or now, but it is interesting to note that in that 1967 SOTU, LBJ also called for a 6 percent surcharge on personal and corporate income taxes to pay for the cost of the war. That's a level of responsibility -- and yes, sacrifice -- for war that our current president is unwilling to take."

Imad,

I hate myself!

I noticed that I was waiting for el Khara's State of the Union address exactly I as I used to do waiting for Saddam addressing the Iraqis.

I nealy cried!

Truely history repeats itself and humans (leaders) never learn from past mistakes.

I saw your site (Iraqi expatriate scientists). How do you find the time for all that? I liked your reply to the man who was telling you Dr. so and so is angry! I salute you.

Love

Brilliant, Imad!!

xymphora, What 'surge' really means: I thought there was at least a chance that Bush would dance with the ones who brought him, and reject the latest version of the Zionist Plan for the Middle East. Apparently not. ...

... Just to confirm who is running things, there is a tiny reference in Bush’s speech to more for Israel:

“We will expand intelligence sharing – and deploy Patriot air defence systems to reassure our friends and allies.”

The neocons have been lying in the weeds, pretending to have been soundly defeated by the all-powerful American Establishment. Nothing could be further from the truth. Bush’s speech could have been – and probably was – written by Bill Kristol. The Zionist Plan for the Middle East continues, with the next step ensuring that Iraq breaks up. ...

Chris Floyd, Operation Cannon Fodder: Bush's Grand Delusion: So here's the plan from George W. Bush:

1.We're going to send some more troops, but not enough to make any kind of substantial difference in the disposal of forces on the ground.
2. The Iraqis are going to run their own military units now, but Americans will "back them up" in an escalation of horrific urban warfare against both Sunni and Shiite militias, in crowded civilian neighborhoods. (Just to show where the true balance of these forces will lie, the Americans are committing 20,000 additional troops; the Iraqis have pledged to scrape up 8,000 more somewhere. It looks like the "support" tail will still be wagging the attack dog.)
3. The Iraqis have been given a set of "benchmarks" they have to meet – including the all-important oil law – or else…or else…something or other will happen. (There is a "Plan B" should this new plan fail, Bush officials told the New York Times – but they won't say what it is. No doubt it's resting on the same shelf where Richard Nixon kept his "secret plan" for victory in Vietnam back in 1968.)
4. In any case, should the new plan fail, it was all Nouri al-Maliki's idea anyway.
5. And by the way, Iran is "materially helping" the insurgents kill Americans, so we will be fully justified in launching the military action against them that we are now preparing. (This is the real Plan B, of course; as we noted earlier, the Democrats are already gung-ho for a beat-down of Iran. When the new plan for Iraq goes FUBAR – as go FUBAR it must – the trigger will be pulled on Tehran.)
6. But the main thing is – a lot more Americans and Iraqis are about to die. And if you don't like it, you can lump it.

Ismael Hossein-zadeh, Why the US Is Not Leaving Iraq: The spoils of war and devastation in Iraq have been so attractive that an an extremely large number of war profiteers have set up shop in that country in order to participate in the booty: “There are about 100,000 government contractors operating in Iraq, not counting subcontractors, a total that is approaching the size of the U.S. military force there, according to the military's first census of the growing population of civilians operating in the battlefield,” reported The Washington Post in its 5 December 2006 issue.

The fact that powerful beneficiaries of war dividends flourish in an atmosphere of war and international convulsion should not come as a surprise to anyone. What is surprising is that, in the context of the recent US wars of choice, these beneficiaries have also acquired the power of promoting wars, often by manufacturing “external threats to our national interest.” In other words, profit-driven beneficiaries of war have also evolved as war makers, or contributors to war making.

As with Iraq, the world's leading military superpower used its weapons to kill innocent people in their own country. Also, the United States demonized Somalia leader Mohamed Aidid much in the same way in which it discredited Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. ...

Robert Parry, The U.S.-Iran-Iraq-Israeli-Syrian War: Without doubt, Bush’s actions in the past two months – reaffirming his determination to succeed in Iraq and warning about a possible regional explosion if he fails – suggest that his future course is an escalation of the conflict, not some “graceful exit.”

Martin Fletcher, The Islamists were the one hope for Somalia: The US has a record of confronting Islamic movements. It backed Israel’s disastrous war against Hezbollah last summer. It never accepted the Palestinians’ election of a Hamas Government. It cold-shouldered Iran even when the relatively moderate Mohammed Khatami was President. In each case it succeeded only in boosting the extremists.

Robert Fisk, Bush's new strategy - the march of folly: "The one endeavour at which Islamic peoples excel is expelling imperial powers by terror and guerrilla war. We have started up the road to empire and over the next hill we will meet those who went before."

US military strike on Iran seen by April ’07; Sea-launched attack to hit oil, N-sites: Recent statements emanating from the United States indicate the Bush administration’s new strategy for Iraq doesn’t include any proposal to make a compromise or negotiate with Syria or Iran. A reliable source said President Bush recently held a meeting with Vice President Dick Cheney, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Secretary of State Dr Condoleezza Rice and other assistants in the White House where they discussed the plan to attack Iran in minute detail.

Film of Saddam aides' hanging shown: Tony Blair's official spokesman today said Britain remained opposed to capital punishment, but it was a sovereign choice for Iraq. "Our position on the death penalty is well known. We've made our position known to the Iraqi government," he said.

(Tony Blair, "opposed to capital punishment", is a mendacious, hypocritical war criminal.)

More than 34,000 Iraqis killed last year (Sounds like a very conservative estimate)

Bush prepares State of the Union address [Tuesday, 23 January]: "President Bush will use the State of the Union to unveil a positive, comprehensive agenda that will improve the daily lives of the American people and explain how our actions in the world will make our nation safer and better," White House counselor Dan Bartlett said.

Michael T. Klare, The Pentagon as an Energy-Protection Racket: Unlike Islamo-fascism, Energo-fascism will, in time, affect nearly every person on the planet. Either we will be compelled to participate in or finance foreign wars to secure vital supplies of energy, such as the current conflict in Iraq; or we will be at the mercy of those who control the energy spigot ... . This is not simply some future dystopian nightmare, but a potentially all-encompassing reality whose basic features, largely unnoticed, are developing today.

xymphora, Further reflections on the 'surge'
1. Just as I thought, American legislators are drawing their ‘line in the sand’ at Iran. The ‘Iran talk’ had the desired effect of giving Bush a pass on his Iraq plans, as long as he doesn’t attack Iran. The Democrat trick is to make a big deal about Iran so Bush can get away with his Zionist plan to break up Iraq by increasing the violence levels. ...

2. How many deadlines have we now passed that ‘experts’ assured us would be the certain start of an attack on Iran?

3. For a supposedly important speech, Bush’s ‘surge’ speech was remarkably vague. It is almost impossible to determine what he intends to do (which may in part reflect the fact that his military advisors were unable to tell him what they could do, especially given that there aren’t even enough additional troops for a surge-let). The summary seems to be that the Americans are going to kill a lot more Sunnis, and the Iraqi government is supposed to rein in the Shi’ite militias, by diplomacy or otherwise (something which we know will never happen, but which appears to be a bone thrown to the Saudis). The upshot is that the ultimate position of Iran in Iraqi politics will be strengthened.

4. Of course, Americans have neither the technical ability, nor the motivation, to figure out who they are killing before they kill. Sunnis, Shi’ites, they all look the same at the end of a gun.

5. The two big fault lines in Iraq are Sunni vs. Shi’ite, and Kurd vs. Rest of Iraq. The Zionist goal is to have both of these break, but the irony is that the second one is holding the first one together. The Rest of Iraq ... – Sunnis and Shi’ites – doesn’t want the Kurds to get away with stealing the Kirkuk oil fields. They are thus inclined to stick together to keep the whole country together. The Kurds themselves seem to realize that separation means defeat at the hands of the Turks (Iran also wants the Kurds to stay in an Iraqi federation, as a separate Kurdistan will want to annex northern Iran). Despite American/Zionist violence, various pressures continue to hold the country together. [ . . . ]

“When will this Nightmare End?” ... Bush’s real intention is not security but terrorizing the civilian population into submission. It's a textbook example of military pacification.* As one 55 year old resident of Haifa queried, "Is this the new paradise the Americans said they would give us when they invaded our country?" Then he added, "When is this nightmare going to end"?

Another article which appeared in Azzaman news service, "US Warplanes bomb Baghdad as Street Battles Rage", provides a similar account of US attacks on neighborhoods in the capital:

"US troops are deploying massive air and ground fire against heavily populated residential areas in Baghdad as a prelude to the start of a campaign to retake the city they invaded nearly 4 years ago….The victims have been innocent Iraqis and the city’s rickety infrastructure. Witnesses’ say US bombing has already knocked out several power lines and water mains in these areas."

"The sky is burning," said one witness who refused to be named for fear of revenge.

Nothing the Bush administration says can be trusted. To fully understand current policy in Iraq, one must follow events on the ground, that’s where the truth lies.

The war in Iraq is not an "ideological struggle against Islamic extremism", as Bush avers, but a brutal colonial war aimed at Iraqi civilians; the rest is merely smoke and mirrors.
-----------------
* Disgusting beyond all other manipulative & bloody military doublespeak: 'Pacification'.
