Off the record: "Iraq could use a 'dictator' to take control of Iraq"

"In another exchange, after assuring that comments are "off the record," Rumsfeld and one of the military analysts agree that Iraq could use a "Syngman Rhee" to take control of Iraq.
Syngman Rhee was the ruthless authoritarian dictator of South Korea from after World War II through the Korean War to 1960.
If the invasion of Iraq was about liberating the Iraqis from a tyrant in the form of Saddam Hussein why is Rumsfeld talking about installing an even more brutal dictator?"

"What the Iraqi fighter found threatened America's vital alliance with Sunni militia.
A week ago in a police station shooting range on Baghdad's western outskirts, the American-allied Iraqi militiaman found what one or more GIs had been using for target practice -- a copy of the Quran, Islam's holy book.
Riddled with bullets, the rounds piercing deep into the thick volume, the pages were shredded. Turning the holy book in his hands, the man found two handwritten English words, scrawled in pen. "F*** yeah."
The discovery was incendiary. It was an affront to Islam and a serious challenge to the religious credentials of the U.S-allied militias, or Awakening Councils, who turned on al-Qaeda and are now on the U.S. government payroll.

"Speaking with PBS’s Bill Moyers on Friday, Sands noted that these architects of torture refuse to acknowledge they were “complicit in the commission of a crime.” “There was not a hint of recognition that anything had gone wrong, nor a hint of recognition of individual responsibility,” he said of his interviews with key torture advocates.
Sands cited former Pentagon official Doug Feith, who was instrumental in shredding the Geneva Conventions, as an example:
"When you read my account with Doug Feith and with others, you will see the sort of weaseling out of individual responsibility, the total and abject failure to accept involvement.
Read Mr. Feith’s book. on how to fight the so-called war on terror.
And it’s as though the man had no involvement in the decisions relating to interrogation of detainees.
And yet, as I describe in the book, the man was deeply involved in the decision making from step one.
So it’s about individual responsibility. And there’s been an abject failure on that account."

"The deaths of two U.S. soldiers in western Baghdad last week have sparked concerns that Iraqi insurgents have developed a new weapon capable of striking what the U.S. military considers its most explosive-resistant vehicle.
The soldiers were riding in a Mine Resistant Ambush Protective vehicle, known as an MRAP, when an explosion sent a blast of super-heated metal through the MRAP's armor and into the vehicle, killing them both.
Their deaths brought to eight the number of American troops killed while riding in an MRAP, which was developed and deployed to Iraq last year after years of acrimony over light armor on the Army's workhorse vehicle, the Humvee.
... The Pentagon has set aside $5.4 billion to acquire 4,000 MRAPs.
... But last Wednesday's attack has shown that the MRAPs are vulnerable to an especially potent form of IED known as an EFP, for explosively formed penetrator, which fires a superheated cone of metal through the vehicle's armor."

Pentagon's "Truth" web sites ... مواقع أمريكية لترقيع الأكاذيب

"The Pentagon is expanding "Information Operations" on the Internet with purposefully set up foreign news websites that are designed to look like independent media sources but in reality are nothing more than direct military propaganda.
USA Today reports:
"The Pentagon is setting up a global network of foreign-language news websites, including an Arabic site for Iraqis, and hiring local journalists to write current events stories and other content that promote U.S. interests and counter insurgent messages."
The websites at http://www.balkantimes.com, http://www.magharebia.com and http://mawtani.com are three of the said Pentagon run operations aimed at people in the Balkans, North Africa and Iraq.
... The Mawtani.com disclaimer is in Arabic. It reads:
"(Mawtani.com is) sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense to support the resolution No. 1723 (of the) Security Council of the United Nations. (Mawtani.com) highlights and emphasizes the move towards greater regional stability through bilateral and multilateral cooperation ... and the steps taken by governments towards stability in Iraq."
... According to a Special Operations Command notice aimed at contractors interested in running the sites ... it states "All contractor personnel shall hold a U.S. SECRET security clearance and be able to obtain a U.S.TOP SECRET clearance. Contractor will require access to both classified and unclassified government computer systems facilities. Contractor will be authorized to courier classified information up to the SECRET level in performance of official duties upon approval of and designation by the Government." "

ـ"وكما في النكتة المعروفة عن قاتل أبويه، والذي طلب من المحكمة الرأفة لأنه يتيم، يتذرع نظام الاحتلال في بغداد بالإرهاب لتبرير الكارثة التي أنزلها بالبلد. وهل هناك إرهاب أشنع من قتل وجرح وتشريد ملايين العراقيين؟"ـ
