The Americans are not listening (thanks to the ear deafening background noise of the mainstream media):"The US government is on a “burning platform” of unsustainable policies and practices with fiscal deficits, chronic healthcare underfunding, immigration and overseas military commitments threatening a crisis if action is not taken soon, the country’s top government inspector has warned.
David Walker, comptroller general of the US, issued the unusually downbeat assessment of his country’s future in a report that lays out what he called “chilling long-term simulations”.

"On Thursday, a suicide bomber dressed in a police uniform attacked a meeting of U.S.-backed tribal sheiks in Karmah, killing more than 20, including three U.S. Marines and the mayor.
One of the Americans killed was Lt. Col. Max A. Galeai of Pago Pago, American Samoa, the commander of Marines in the Karmah area. The attack happened two days before U.S. officials planned to formally hand over security responsibility for Anbar to the Iraqis, marking a major milestone in the transformation of a province that had been the most violent in Iraq.
U.S. authorities announced Friday they were postponing the handover ceremony because of weather forecasts calling for high winds and sandstorms, which would ground aircraft and make it impossible for dignitaries to attend."US reports pressure on al-Qaida in Iraq's north June 28, 2008.

The "suicide bomber dressed in a police uniform" was in fact a sleeper member of Karma's 'Sahwa' brigade who thus managed to attend the meeting unhindered and get close to the Marine commander of the Karma area. The trip from Baghdad is one hour by car. The need for the Iraqi 'dignitaries' to arrive there only by air transport (in sandless weather) is a measure of the surge's effect on the 'increased security' situation. (30,000 troops heading to Iraq in 2009 June 27, 2008).The below article (in Arabic) refers to the order to arrest Abu Abid who commands 1000 Sahwa members and was the first Sahwa commander in Baghdad's Amariya last year. He claims that the Sahwa brigades are now targeted for elimination by the Americans and the government after fulfilling their role in chasing the Qaida out from their areas. It is also reported that many Sahwa members are now switching over and joining the patriotic resistance forces who are accepting them in their ranks..صحوة الصحوة؟

In the meantime, the occupiers are now enlisting women police to frisk women suicide bombers ($300 for 2-3 days of work in a month) and participate in raids on Iraqi homes.

From my friend Jonathan Schwarz:
"Imad
You may have seen that Iraqis are comparing the US-Iraqi "agreement" now under negotiation to the Anglo-Iraqi Treaty of 1930.
And if you read that earlier agreement, you'll see they're clearly right to do so -- the treaty is uncannily close to what Bush has been pushing for. I guess there are only so many ways to set up colonial fiefdoms.
Interestingly, before now the actual treaty text existed in only one place online -- a pdf in an obscure corner of the UN website. I had to ask Glen Rangwala to track it down."
.
Extracts:
"His Majesty the King of 'Iraq...authorises His Britannic Majesty to maintain forces upon 'Iraq territory at the above localities in accordance with the provisions of the Annexure of this Treaty on the understanding that the presence of those forces shall not constitute in any manner an occupation and will in no way prejudice the sovereign rights of 'Iraq. (Article 5)"
"The aid of His Majesty the King of 'Iraq in the event of war or the imminent menace of war will consist in furnishing to His Britannic Majesty on 'Iraq territory all facilities and assistance in his power including the use of railways, rivers, ports, aerodromes and means of communication. (Article 4)"
"The strength of the forces maintained in 'Iraq by His Britannic Majesty...shall be determined by His Britannic Majesty from time to time after consultation with His Majesty the King of 'Iraq...His Majesty the King of 'Iraq will grant to His Britannic Majesty for the duration of the Alliance leases of the necessary sites for the accommodation of the forces of His Britannic Majesty in those localities. (Annexure 1)"
"[T]he immunities and privileges in jurisdictional and fiscal matters, including freedom from taxation, enjoyed by the British forces in 'Iraq will continue to extend to the forces referred to in Clause 1 above and to such of His Britannic Majesty's forces of all arms as may be in 'Iraq in pursuance of the present Treaty... (Annexure 2)"

Dr. Kurukchi is the very picture of patriotism and dedication. The next time we come up with a new oath for physicians to swear, it ought to have his name."
.
"One by one, a nurse summons the patients, who are sitting outside in layers of bandages that give them the deathly look of mummies. The surgeon checks on shrapnel still embedded in the bodies of bombing survivors. He resets the broken bones of torture victims. He studies X-rays of legs shredded by bullets.

Then the doctor quickly steals home to his blockaded sanctuary a few yards from a police station, not to emerge until it's time for the next day's rounds at the hospital. He's already survived a kidnapping. His staff has dwindled from 36 surgeons to six.
With his British residency and comfortable savings, Dr. Muthaffar Kurukchi could leave, too, joining more than 15,000 Iraqi medical professionals who've fled the country since the war began.
Yet he continues to show up each morning, smiling and bespectacled as he works his way through at least 60 cases before 4 p.m.
He's heartbroken over the fragmenting of his country and disillusioned by the unfulfilled promises of the U.S. occupation, but he's determined to stay."

"Dear Hashim
Please read the followings [above links] carefully and send me whatever you have written about your brave work in Basrah in order to pass it to Imad to be published, also if you have any related materials about friends who are doing the same.
Saad

Dear Saad
So delighted to hear from you .
I went through this stuff , it is heartbreaking .
I'm still here in Basrah for nearly four decades now, and I have no intention to leave. I have great pleasure in serving our people. I' ll tell you something, during the 90s there was an exidus of doctors and technicians from Iraq. In order to protect myself against a moment of weakness that might take me out of Iraq, I destroyed all my graduation and qualification documents.
I thank God I still have the will to serve my people inspite of threats and a bomb planted in my garden.
That is not bravery or heroic , it is just repaying the debt to this land .
May God bless Iraq."

"A BBC investigation estimates that around $23bn (£11.75bn) may have been lost, stolen or just not properly accounted for in Iraq.
The BBC's Panorama programme has used US and Iraqi government sources to research how much some private contractors have profited from the conflict and rebuilding.
A US gagging order is preventing discussion of the allegations.
The order applies to 70 court cases against some of the top US companies.
