Collective psychopathy: ". . . is it even possible to imagine an Op-Ed or column being published by a major newspaper that enthusiastically trumpeted all of the great strategic benefits that would accrue to Muslims from the violent deaths of large numbers of Israeli civilians, the way Friedman today did with regard to the deaths of Palestinian and Lebanese civilians?"
Family of Iraqi shoe thrower says he remains in isolation: More than a month has passed since an Iraqi television reporter threw his shoes at President George W. Bush during a news conference held to highlight what Bush called a successful U.S. military effort to pacify Iraq.

The journalist, Muntader al-Zaidi, 29, who was immediately arrested, has been allowed only two visitors - and none since Dec. 21, according to those close to him. His family and his lawyer say they do not know where he is being held and are gravely concerned about him.

On Wednesday, Dhiyaa al-Saadi, Zaidi's lawyer, said he had recently seen medical records that were part of Zaidi's court file that added credence to the journalist's claim that he had been beaten and tortured after his arrest on Dec. 14 by the security detail of Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki.

Saadi said two separate medical reports conducted by government physicians within a week of Zaidi's arrest described bruising that covered the reporter's face and body but was especially severe on his legs and arms; a missing tooth; a gash on the bridge of his nose; and what appeared to be a burn mark on his ear.

Saadi said he had not been permitted to remove the records from the office of the judge investigating the case, so the existence of the documents could not be verified independently. But the account of Zaidi's wounds matches injuries described by Zaidi's brother after his prison visit last month.

Uday al-Zaidi, 33, said Wednesday that he feared that his brother, who faces up to seven years in prison, might not emerge from government custody.

Video (4 min), What You Need To Know About Israel's "Colonies": Anna Baltzer, a young Jewish American, went to the West Bank to discover the realities of daily life for Palestinians under the occupation. What she found would change her outlook on the conflict forever. . . . For five months, Baltzer lived and worked with farmers, Palestinian and Israeli activists, and the families of political prisoners, traveling with them across endless checkpoints and roadblocks to reach hospitals, universities, and olive groves.

Baltzer witnessed firsthand the environmental devastation brought on by expanding settlements and outposts and the destruction wrought by Israels Security Fence, which separates many families from each other, their communities, their land, and basic human services. What emerges from Baltzers journal is not a sensationalist tale of suicide bombers and conspiracies, but a compelling and inspiring description of the trials of daily life under the occupation. ...

MP makes Israeli troops Nazi link: Sir Gerald, who was brought up as an orthodox Jew and Zionist, told MPs: "My grandmother was ill in bed when the Nazis came to her home town .. a German soldier shot her dead in her bed.

"My grandmother did not die to provide cover for Israeli soldiers murdering Palestinian grandmothers in Gaza."

"The present Israeli government ruthlessly and cynically exploit the continuing guilt from gentiles over the slaughter of Jews in the Holocaust as justification for their murder of Palestinians."

"We had an IRA bomb in Manchester which destroyed much of the centre - we didn't send troops over to Belfast to murder 1,000 Catholics."

Sir Gerald said he had been a long-term supporter of Israel and has personally known many of its prime pinisters.

But he added: "I am not going to stand by and keep silent when the Israeli troops - with a dreadful government sending them there - kill large numbers of innocent people with no useful result at the end of it all."

Video (7 min): Mohamed Khodr - Bush's Farewell to Israel: The Genocide of Gaza with American Arms
Fail to the Chief, Episode One: In celebration of the imminent demise of the criminal Bush administration (to be followed immediately by ascent of the criminal Obama administration) I offer this photographic walk down memory lane.
Amid talk of cease-fire, eyewitness accounts describe Israel’s destruction of Gaza: "Armageddon" is the word used by Times of London correspondent Martin Fletcher, the first eyewitness from the British news media to see the devastation wrought by Israel in Gaza.

Twenty days after the Israeli military unleashed its firepower on the narrow strip of land containing 1.5 million people—more than half of them children—there is "no one left in the ruins to hear the thunder of Israel's guns," Fletcher wrote.
Devastation has always been a goal for Israel: Israel’s military strategy in Gaza, even in what is likely to be the “final act” as officials are calling it, is following a blueprint laid down during the Lebanon war more than two years ago.

Then, Israel destroyed much of Lebanon’s infrastructure in a month of intensive air strikes. Even in the war’s last few hours, as a ceasefire was being finalised, Israel fired more than a million cluster bombs over south Lebanon, apparently in the hope that the area could be made as uninhabitable as possible.
Morocco: Hackers target Israeli websites to protest over Gaza: A group of Moroccan computer hackers have united in an aggressive campaign of internet piracy in a bid to influence Israeli public opinion in relation to the country's three week military offensive in the Gaza Strip. The group, known as Marocco Snipers, includes dozens of technology experts from the North African country.

According to local media, these Moroccan hackers have entered at least 80 Israeli sites in the past few days, blocking their servers and changing their home pages.

There are many important sites that belong to the country's institutions and companies. Several of these sites have been destroyed, while others have only been modified.

In one incident, they published a series of photos that depict Gaza children who were injured in Israeli bomb attacks to show Israelis what was happening in the coastal territory and push them to intervene to stop the air raids.
Venezuela’s Chavez says Obama has “stench” of Bush . . . and was at risk of being killed if he tries to change the American “empire.”
Punishing the Palestinians: In the long sixty-year tortured history of the Palestinian expulsion from their lands, Congress has maintained that it is always the Palestinians, the Palestinian Authority, and now Hamas who are to blame for all hostilities and their consequences with the Israeli government.

The latest illustration of this Washington puppet show, backed by the most modern weapons and billions of taxpayer dollars annually sent to Israel, was the grotesquely one-sided Resolutions whisked through the Senate and the House of Representatives.

While a massive bombing and invasion of Gaza was underway, the resolution blaming Hamas for all the civilian casualties and devastation-99% of it inflicted on Palestinians-zoomed through the Senate by voice vote and through the House by a vote of 390 to 5 with 22 legislators voting present.

The bias is clear. It is always the Palestinians' fault. Right-wingers who would never view the U.S. government as perfect see the Israeli government as never doing anything wrong. Liberals who do not hesitate to criticize the U.S. military view all Israeli military attacks, invasions and civilian devastation as heroic manifestations of Israeli defense.

The inversion of history and the scope of amnesia know no limits. What about the fact that the Israeli government drove Palestinians from their lands in 1947-48 with tens of thousands pushed into the Gaza strip. No problem to Congress.

Then the fact that the Israeli government cruelly occupied, in violation of UN resolutions, the West Bank and Gaza in 1967 and only removed its soldiers and colonists from Gaza (1.5 million people in a tiny area twice the size of the District of Columbia) in 2005. To Congress, the Palestinians deserved it.

Then when Hamas was freely elected to run Gaza, the Israeli authorities cut off the tax revenues on imports that belonged to the Gaza government. This threw the Gazans into a fiscal crisis-they were unable to pay their civil servants and police.

In 2006, the Israelis added to their unrelieved control of air, water and land around the open-air prison by establishing a blockade. The natives became restless. Under international law, a blockade is an act of war. Primitive rockets, called by reporters "wildly inaccurate" were fired into Israel. During this same period, Israeli soldiers and artillery and missiles would go into Gaza at will and take far more lives and cause far more injuries than those incurred by those rockets. Civilians-especially children, the infirm and elderly-died or suffered week after week for lack of medicines, medical equipment, food, electricity, fuel and water which were embargoed by the Israelis.

Then the Israeli bombing followed by the invasion during the past three weeks with what prominent Israeli writer Gideon Levy called "a brutal and violent operation...far beyond what was needed for protecting the people in its south." Mr. Levy observed what the president of the United Nations General Assembly, Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann called a war against "a helpless and defenseless imprisoned population."

The horror of being trapped from fleeing the torrent of the most modern weapons of war from the land, air and seas is reflected in this passage from Amira Hass, writing in the leading Israeli newspaper Haaretz:

"The earth shaking under your feet, clouds of choking smoke, explosions like a fireworks display, bombs bursting into all-consuming flames that cannot be extinguished with water, mushroom clouds of pinkish-red smoke, suffocating gas, harsh burns on the skin, extraordinary maimed live and dead bodies."

Ms. Hass is pointing to the use of new anti-civilian weapons used on the Gazan people. So far there have been over 1100 fatalities, many thousands of injuries and the destruction of homes, schools, mosques, hospitals, pharmacies, granaries, farmer's fields and many critical public facilities. The clearly marked UN headquarters and UN school were smashed, along with stored medicines and food supplies.

Why? The Congressional response: "Hamas terrorists" everywhere.

Travel advisory issued for top IDF officers: IDF officers intending to travel to Europe, whether for business or pleasure, have been advised to contact the Judge Advocate General's Office prior to leaving Israel; and some may be instructed not to leave the country.

The advisory has been issued following Israel's concern that international arrest warrants may be issued against officers who were involved in the Israeli offensive in Gaza, on charges of war crimes.

Video (3 min): Marchers Demand: "Arrest Bush!" (Bless the hearts of every single one of these justice-loving souls.)

"I understand that Bush is going to go put together his presidential library. This begs the question of what will be put in his library. He lost all his emails and he and his staff can't remember anything that happened during his administration.

Why the other day I heard him say he was so upset when the economy collapsed, "Why did it have to happen on my shift?"

Perhaps it will be the first presidential library with internet porn sites, featuring Jeff Gannon, the White House "reporter." Pictures of Mark Foley, posing with the pages, could be hung on the wall. The phony Italian certified evidence of Saddam Hussein's search for yellow-cake uranium could be framed and hung as well. They could have a replica of a taxidermy of attorney Harry Whittington's head hanging on the wall, with a plaque commemorating his apology to Dick Cheney for the inconvenience he caused him by being shot by him.

Charts of the collapse of the dollar and Wall Street, following the massive deregulation ushered in by Bush could be displayed next to the massive increase in the deficit, caused by his massacre in Iraq, the sucking sound to the East and utter failure of the US Immigration and Naturalization offices to enforce any laws during his tenure.

In the end, it's sure to look more like Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum than a presidential library."

Israel’s Message: ‘Gaza is the problem,’ Levy Eshkol, then prime minister of Israel, said in June 1967. ‘I was there in 1956 and saw venomous snakes walking in the street. We should settle some of them in the Sinai, and hopefully the others will immigrate.’ Eshkol was discussing the fate of the newly occupied territories: he and his cabinet wanted the Gaza Strip, but not the people living in it.

Between 1967 and 2005, Gaza’s land and water were plundered by Jewish settlers in Gush Katif at the expense of the local population. The price of peace and security for the Palestinians there was to give themselves up to imprisonment and colonisation. Since 2000, Gazans have chosen instead to resist in greater numbers and with greater force. It was not the kind of resistance the West approves of: it was Islamic and military. ...

... Palestinians have been so dehumanised by Israeli Jews – whether politicians, soldiers or ordinary citizens – that killing them comes naturally, as did expelling them in 1948, or imprisoning them in the Occupied Territories. ...
Antiwar Activists “Boot” Dubya Out the Door: On Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, hundreds of antiwar activists got a chance to shout “good riddance” to George W. Bush--one of the worst presidents in all of American history. They did it by blasting him for his eight warmongering, torture-approving and lawbreaking years in the Oval Office (2001-2009). The lively rally was held at DuPont Circle, in Washington, D.C. Besides the blood stained wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, experts predict Bush’s inept policies will cost the taxpayers “$10.35 trillion in new debt and accrued obligations.” (1) After the speeches at DuPont Circle, the protesters marched about 15 blocks south to the White House. There, they tossed shoes, sandals, slippers and combat boots, a la Iraqi journalist Muntada Al-Zaidi, at the White House gate, while loudly chanting: “Arrest Bush!” (2)

Before heading to the White House, however, a huge, inflated doll figure, about 20 feet tall, of President Bush, was set up in DuPont Circle. It was dressed in the outfit that he wore when he did his “Mission Accomplished” stunt. The figure was used as shoe target practice by the protesters. Like Pinocchio of the Italian fairy tale, the Bush character had a very long nose. A study indicated that the Bush-Cheney Gang had concocted 935 lies to justify its invasion and occupation of Iraq. Arab blogs: Tents in desert reveal Israeli plan to transfer Gazans to Egypt: According to Professor As'ad AbuKhalil, author of the 'Angry Arab' blog, fellow blogger Ahdaf Souif in (Egyptian) Rafah told him, "Outside the general Hospital in Egyptian Rafah a city of tents has sprung up. I counted 200. But the soldiers there told me they have many more and can set them up immediately. They said the beds and furnishings for all the camps are ready. I was also told that other camps are being set up, in el-Arish and other locations. I was told these camps were being set up for 'the Palestinian refugees.'”

Israeli rightists have, in the past, promoted a plan to deny the Palestinian people a state by making Gaza part of Egypt, and the West Bank (minus the Israeli settlements) part of Jordan. Avigdor Lieberman, one of the most outspoken proponents of such a plan, is currently a member of the Israeli cabinet.
A Time to Break Silence: By Rev. Martin Luther King

In his "Beyond Vietnam" speech delivered at New York's Riverside Church on April 4, 1967 -- a year to the day before he was murdered -- King called the United States "the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today."
