I think the solution of the riddle of the conference is, perhaps, in its date "March 14-15". The date commemorates the events of Halabja, it was chosen last year as the Day of Mass Graves. if the aim of the conference is to (help improve and sustain higher education in iraq), it is because higher education in the new Iraq is equivalent to DEATH.

Unfortunately Itraqi government help is for senior Iraqi academics to spend a free summer holiday in US. I want younger people to come and work with a group and learn for 6 months and return to finish a phD or whatever in Baghdad.

What else ca we do now? Lots of milk has been soilled by lots of people in the centuries.

But even at age 83 I am tired of blaming people in the past.
I look at the past to learn for the future

below is what I wrote few days ago to a friend regarding the "impressive list"

Dear .......
I read all the document thinking that there must be something behind it such as conference papers or so. There was nothing and apparently it was just a gathering.
I did recognize a small number of names who I am sure they have served Iraq like you and me and some of them for a long time. However, the majority or rather the greater majority were totally unrecognizable and I wonder where they were when you and I had to slug for our country and our profession. I am sure that probably 99% were educated with Iraqi resources all the way.
Now I honestly do not mind all this and it was my choice and yours to do what we did, but somehow I have the feeling that some of these people think we are fools or may be even incompetent and that is why we stayed in Iraq. The other point is that some of them may visit Iraq now and tell us how wonderful it has become since the occupation like Muthanna Kubba did on his recent visit to Iraq.
I must be depressed today to tell you all these things.

Censorship on Iraqi Resistance: We all know this: Youtube allows Videos from American Military, but a Clip showing their Crimes in Iraq or the Iraqi Resistance will be deleted.

Websites are shut down, the western Media censors everything related to the Resistance (to talk about their alQaeda Cell all the time) and everything should become quiet. But now, it’s a new chapter as Google decided to put the great News Service UrukNet out of their News Archive; also, the important NDHF Portal became censored.

We ask you not to forget these Websites and spread them even if Google tries to block them: Even a person that rejects the Iraqi Resistance might be interested in their views, and even a person that is not interested in politics should notice this scandal of censoring material via the largest search engine in the Web!

No license, but Blackwater is still in Iraq: Private security guards employed by the company, now known as Xe, are slated to continue ground operations in parts of Iraq long into the summer, far longer than had previously been acknowledged, government officials told The Associated Press.

In addition, helicopters working for Xe's aviation wing, Presidential Airways, will provide air security for U.S. diplomatic convoys into September, almost two years after the Iraqi government first said it wanted the firm out.

The company's continued presence raises fresh questions about the strength of Iraq's sovereignty even as the Obama administration urges the budding government to take more responsibility for the nation's future.

The company declined to comment about a timetable for leaving. "We follow the direction of our U.S. government client," Xe spokeswoman Anne Tyrrell said. Last February, Blackwater changed its name to Xe — pronounced ZEE — in a bid to leave its controversial reputation behind.

Blackwater has been shifting its focus to other lines of business, including international training and air support in places like Afghanistan and Africa.

April 21-22, 2009 -- Could net be closing in on Representative Solomon Ortiz over Iraqi contractor scandal? On April 15, 2009, WMR reported that private military contractor (PMC) sources who served in Iraq claimed that Representative Solomon Ortiz (D-TX) had a vested interest in the contracting activities of Future Services General Trading and Contracting Company, a Kuwaiti firm that reportedly amassed in excess of $100 million in contracts from the U.S. military, as well as coalition forces in Iraq. In July 2008, Lee William Dubois, a former US Army captain, was arrested at Dulles International Airport in Virginia. Dubois was charged by federal prosecutors with stealing over 10 million gallons of fuel valued at $40 million from Camp Liberty in Baghdad. From 2007 to 2008, Dubois was a project leader for Future Services General Trading and Contracting. In 2005, Dubois, still on active duty in the Army, was signing off on Army contracts for Future Services in Iraq.

Dubois' accomplice in the fuel heist was his Future Services supervisor, Elias Maalouf, who has a warrant out for his arrest. Dubois' scheme involved stashing some $450,000 he made from the theft of the fuel into a Lebanese bank account.

However, it has been reported that court documents filed in the U.S. District Court for Eastern Virginia in Alexandria indicate that Dubois is now working with federal prosecutors to identify others involved in the Future Services contractor fraud.

WMR also reported that "a top contractor at COB [Contingency Operating Base] Adder for L-3 Communication's Titan Group ordered our PMC source never to "mention the name of Ortiz as being an associate of Future Services Group." With Dubois singing to federal prosecutors about the extent of the Future Services fraud, Congressman Ortiz may have reason to worry about the outcome.

Of all of the areas in Iraq in desperate need of attention, its "emerging new media industry" is not the one that pops to mind. Things like clean water, electricity, right of safe return for refugees and an end to the occupation seem more pressing than increasing Nouri al Maliki's Twitter followers.
