Us(S) Torture? Nah...We are better at it than "them"

.
I received a passionate email from an old friend regarding a recently aired ABC video of a 2004 incident in which Sheikh Issa, the brother of the UAE Emir Sheikh Khalifa, is violently punishing an Afghan (CNN report - in Arabic) who swindled him out of a US$5,000 grain delivery deal. It was very shocking to my old friend who is now in Chicago.

This is my response to her:

"The video is indeed repugnant.

But is anybody in the email list that were addressed recalling the Americans' atrocities in Abu Ghraib prison (and the then pregnant smiley face (see below) who is now a mother) and their treatment of Guantanamo’s "guests”?

And, would anyone in your email list be still sympathizing with the US war criminal soldier (Steven Green) who is still bragging in court "'that was awesome'” about his raping and burning of the 14 years old Abeer Qassim al-Janabi in Mahmoudiya in 2006?

We posted earlier (on July 5, 2006) on this gruesome war crime. This is a more comprehensive coverage of that horrific incident.

Why, then, is there such a singled repugnance of the above mentioned Issa incident and no repugnance is expressed (as far as has come to my attention) in the case of Green?

Is it because that “it is OK if it is one of us" but "it is NOT OK if it is one of “them""?

Ponder, and please respond, if you would."

.
PS: The video was released by a former Lebanese business associate of Issa, a Bassam Al-Nabulsi, who posted it in revenge after he fell out on a business deal with Issa. So much for business deals and a belated conscious awakening when money is concerned. Where is Madoff when we need him?

But that was the military, acting under orders etc etc , whereas this was an individual....is it different?

'A Play for Gaza': A debate on hatred: What has angered supporters of Israel are the words and evocative imagery she employs, particularly at the play's climax. The script, which is available online at royalcourt theatre.com, features a cast of adults discussing what to tell children during pivotal moments in modern Jewish history. Divided into seven scenes, it begins with a child in hiding, apparently from the Nazis. Subsequent scenes include the founding of Israel, the Six Day War and the first intifada, before concluding with the war in Gaza.

Abe Foxman is one of the Devil's Inflamed Hemorrhoids: ... Abe… the Israelis and their Zionist supporters are worse than the Nazis. I’m never going to recant or change my tune on this. I wouldn’t let the threat of jail or anything else keep me from letting you know that I know that you are an inflamed hemorrhoid in the devil’s rear end. ...

Let me sum it up for you Abe. Zionism and it’s weapon of ‘Anti-Semitism’ were created to give the impression that the people who took Palestine by force and evicted what inhabitants they didn’t kill and who imprisoned the rest in Warsaw-like ghettos are Biblical inheritors of that land. Actually, the real Semitic inhabitants were already there. This presented a public relations problem so you and your reptile, hemorrhoid associates needed to pretend that you were the people you replaced. ...

Now you’re using this hate crime legislation, which you and your proxies are behind, to stifle any and all opposition to your relentless assault on the freedom of human thought, speech and action.

Brits Sound Final Retreat From Iraq -- But the U.S. Beat Goes On: ... [T]housands of American "combat troops" (a distinction without a difference that is key to the Obama plan) will actually remain in Iraqi cities after the June 30 deadline "mandated" by the soft, fluffy SOFA for the withdrawal of fighting troops to bases outside urban areas. How can this be? Simple: American and Iraqi authorities are simply, arbitrarily declaring U.S. bases inside Baghdad's city limits to be suddenly, magically outside the city limits! ...

UAE "torture" scandal and cover-up sparks outrage in the U.S.: ... What kind of primitive, brutal country knows for years that its own powerful government officials participated in torture and then fails even to investigate what happened, let alone impose meaningful accountability on the torturers? The international community simply cannot tolerate acquiescence to that sort of evil. Note that the UAE apparently compensated the victims of the prince's torture, whereas the U.S. blocked -- and continues to try to block -- its own torture victims from even having a day in court.

Had Issa -- who ordered these torture sessions recorded -- only looked to the U.S. for civilized and moral leadership on such matters, he almost certainly could have avoided this trouble:

" U.S. Says C.I.A. Destroyed 92 Tapes of Interrogations The government on Monday revealed for the first time the extent of the destruction of videotapes in 2005 by the Central Intelligence Agency, saying that agency officers destroyed 92 videotapes documenting the harsh interrogations of two Qaeda suspects in C.I.A. detention. . . .

It had been previously known that officials of the agency had destroyed hundreds of hours of videotaped interrogations, but the documents filed Monday reveal the number of tapes. . . . The destroyed videotapes are thought to have depicted some of the harshest interrogation techniques used by the C.I.A.

The Lobby Wants War With Iran: This bill is all about provoking the Iranians, effectively sabotaging efforts to engage in a mutual dialogue with Tehran. Why the egregious packaging? Well, it seems the American people are sick and tired of war, and preparations for war, and so it is far less incriminating if a member of Congress can say he (or she) voted for "the Iran Diplomatic Enhancement Act" than it is to admit they supported isolating Iran economically.

Harman defiant at AIPAC: Rep. Jane Harman received cheers at the AIPAC policy conference this morning for attacking the wiretapping of her conversations with allies of Israel.

"This issue is obviously creating a chilling effect on hardworking bipartisan members of Congress who care intensely about the U.S.-Israel security relationship and have every right to talk to advocacy groups and our good friends about that relationship," she said, referring to "my alleged situation."

Harman promised to pursue the leaking of the wiretap transcripts, which she described as an "abuse of power."

"I will not quit on this until I am absolutely sure that this never can happen to anyone else," she said.

Wayne Madsen Report (in full) -
May 4, 2009 -- New evidence that Hariri assassination was ordered in Washington and Jerusalem: On April 29, 2009, UN Special Tribunal for Lebanon pre-trial Judge Daniel Fransen ordered the release from prison of four Lebanese generals who had been implicated in the 2005 car bombing assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. The special tribunal convened on March 1 of this year and the UN took over the case against the four generals from the Lebanese government.

The four generals, who are considered pro-Syrian, were thought by the initial UN investigators and the Lebanese government to have been involved in a conspiracy hatched by Damascus to kill Hariri. However, as WMR previously reported, the evidence against Syria in the assassinations of Hariri and other leading Lebanese politicians was always flimsy. In fact, the assassinations of Lebanese leaders was cooked up by the Bush administration neo-conservatives and their allies in Jerusalem to force the withdrawal of Syrian forces from Lebanon.

In 2005, under pressure from the Bush administration, a UN investigative committee charged that Syrian and Lebanese intelligence were behind Hariri's assassination. Prior to the release of the four generals, Mohammad Zuhair al-Siddiq, a former Syrian intelligence officer, was arrested in the United Arab Emirates as a suspect in Hariri's assassination.

The four Lebanese generals released were Jamil Sayyad, the chief of Lebanese General Security under the Syrian occupation; Ali al-Hajj, the former chief of the Internal Security Forces; Raymond Azar, the former head of Lebanese Army intelligence; and Mustafa Hamdan, the chief of the Presidential Guard under then-President Emile Lahoud. They were held for four years in prison without charges being brought or even being questioned by prosecutors.

Chief UN prosecutor Daniel Bellemare asked Fransen to drop the case against the "four generals" because a key witness against them retracted his testimony, causing the case to collapse.

Lebanon's Hezbollah welcomed the release of the four generals.

In December 2008, the UN Special Tribunal in a report to the UN Security Council, stated: "Those responsible for the attacks were professional and took extensive measures to cover their tracks and hide their identity. Much of the Commission's activity at this point . . . focuses on piercing this smokescreen to get at the truth."

On October 24, 2006, WMR reported: "A senior French DGSE -- Direction générale de la sécurité extérieure-- intelligence officer has told WMR that Lebanon's ex-Prime Minister Rafik Hariri was killed in a car bombing arranged by Israel's Mossad. The revelation from French intelligence is significant as the French government of Jacques Chirac joined the Bush administration and the neo-con policy establishments in Washington and Israel in blaming Syria for the attack. According to the DGSE officer, Israel and its American backers wanted to blame Syria for the assassination of the popular Lebanese leader in order to blame Syria for the attack thus forcing the popular Lebanese revolt that saw the withdrawal of Syrian forces. That left Lebanon defenseless for the 'Clean Break' attack launched by Israel, with US support, against Hezbollah and Lebanon's infrastructure. WMR was one of the first to report Israeli and American involvement in the assassination of Hariri, as well as those of Elie Hobeika, George Hawi, and other Lebanese politicians."

On March 28, 2008, WMR reported: "A UN panel headed by former Canadian prosecutor Daniel Bellemare has concluded that former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri was assassinated by a 'criminal networK' and not by either Syrian and Lebanese intelligence or Lebanese Hezbollah as proffered by the neocon propaganda mill operating out of Washington, DC and Jerusalem. The UN panel said that a 'Hariri Network' had the ex-Prime Minister under surveillance before the Beirut massive car bombing that killed Hariri and 22 other people in November 2005. WMR previously reported that the 'criminal network' was composed of Lebanese and rogue Syrian intelligence agents connected to Israel's Mossad and a White House operation run by National Security Council senior staff member Elliott Abrams, the formerly convicted Iran-contra figure."

It is not yet known whether al-Siddiq, the former Syrian intelligence agent arrested in the UAE, is thought to be a member of the criminal network, described by the UN, that killed Hariri.

On March 28, 2008, WMR also stated: "Although for political reasons the UN refrained from identifying the members of the 'criminal element,' WMR has reported it included rogue Syrians, Druze, and Palestinian intelligence operatives in Lebanon, as well as mercenaries linked to now jailed international arms smuggler Viktor Bout and members of the Russian-Israeli 'organizatsiya' criminal syndicate. WMR was criticized by the neocon press when it first reported on the actual elements behind Hariri's assassination and charges of 'anti-Semitism' were the rule rather than the exception."

On November 1, 2005, WMR reported: "WMR has obtained the Confidential version of the Mehlis Report on the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Mehlis is the Senior Public Prosecutor in the Attorney General's Office in Berlin. He was named Commissioner of the UN International Independent Investigation Commission into the Hariri assassination. Mehlis is a darling of neocons who served in the Reagan administration. It was his investigation of the 1982 La Belle Discotheque bombing in West Berlin that was used as justification by Reagan to launch a 1986 bombing attack on Libya. Mehlis concluded that Libya was behind the attack conveniently at the same time that pro-Israelis in the Reagan administration, including Richard Perle, Michael Ledeen, Paul Wolfowitz, Jeane Kirkpatrick, Scooter Libby, and others were calling for an attack on Muammar Qaddafi. The Mehlis Report, dated October 19, 2005, states the Commission 'focused on the crime scene, technical aspects of the crime, analysis of telephone intercepts, the testimony of more than 500 witnesses and sources, as well as the institutional context in which the crime took place.' The confidential copy indicates that certain information, all of which implicates Syria and pro-Syrian Lebanese officials, was added just before the report was issued."

The dropping of all charges against the four generals is yet additional proof that the Mehlis Report was a neocon fraud aimed at destabilizing Lebanon in 2005, forcing the withdrawal of the Syrians from the country, sending Syria a warning to close its border with Iraq to prevent fighters from entering Iraq to fight U.S. occupation troops, and leaving Lebanon wide open for a brutal Israeli attack in 2006. WMR's November 1, 2005 report concluded: "Given all the bogus intelligence emanating from the neo cons and their Israeli, British, Italian, and Iraqi allies prior to the invasion of Iraq, the 'intelligence' contained in the Mehlis Report, which may have been placed therein by unconfirmed US Ambassador to the UN John Bolton and his staff, makes the charges against Syria highly dubious."

The dropping of the charges against the four generals is seen as a boost the electoral chances for Hezbollah in June elections. Currently, Lebanon is governed by a pro-U.S. and anti-Syrian government led by Prime Minister Fouad Siniora. The nationalistic and anti-Israeli opposition primarily consists of the Shi'a-dominated Hezbollah and an influential Christian faction led by retired General Michel Aoun.

On April 1, 2005, the a U.S. State Department neocon propaganda unit, referring to this editor as a "self-described journalist," attacked the reports about Hariri being assassinated by U.S. and Israeli interests. The Obama administration continues to maintain the Bush-era State Department propaganda website that attacks journalists who cite American crimes and malfeasance in other countries.

Abu Ghraib Revisited: During the trial of Pfc. Lynndie England, now doing three years in a military prison for her part in the Abu Ghraib prison war crimes, she was asked if there were other things that happened at Abu Ghraib, things that were not photographed, she said, "Yes." When asked if there were worse things that happened, she again said "Yes," but would not elaborate.

While testifying before a Senate panel on May 7, 2004, the now discredited Donald Rumsfeld confirmed that certain videotapes and photographs of the horrific sexual tortures at Abu Ghraib have yet to be released. "If these are released to the public, obviously it's going to make matters worse," Rumsfeld admitted.

The videotapes and photographs that have not yet been made public depict, according to former Abu Ghraib prisoners, bestial US intelligence interrogators and military police personnel raping and sodomizing Iraqi children as young as 11 years old. Some of the new information became known this week when a former Abu Ghraib prison guard posted a video on YouTube.Com confessing to the repeated gang rape of a 15 year old Iraqi girl in custody. The video at http://youtube.com/v/HZuaiZr6YBU was promptly removed after it was making the rounds on the Internet but a transcript survived. The following is a transcript of the most relevant sections: [ . . . ]

There is no doubt that the US has committed war crimes in Iraq of unspeakable horror. The fact is that what occurred at the Abu Ghraib prison have not been isolated incidents. Similar cases have occurred throughout Iraq. One of many cases occurred in Mahmudiya in March of 2006 when a 14 year old girl was gang raped after her parents and her 5 year old sister were massacred by drunk US occupation soldiers. The soldiers entered the young girl's home and forced her father Abeer Qassim al-Janabi, her mother Qassim Hamza and her sister Hadeel Qassim Hamza to an adjoining room. One soldier shot her parents and sister in the head and then all proceeded to repeatedly rape her. After raping her, the US soldiers poured kerosene on her and burned her to death. These rape and killings are among the most heinous in a series of cases by the US occupiers that have tarnished the American military.

Who should pay for these war crimes? Has there been justice in the Abu Ghraib torture crimes? Two of the worse Abu Ghraib torturers received mere 10 and 3 year sentences but one was only a sergeant and the other a private first class. How about the higher ups? Have they been responsible for these war crimes as well? How about Colin Powell, Paul Wolfowitz, Dick Cheney and yes even George Bush?

US interrogators may have killed dozens, human rights researcher and rights group say: Death from interrogation is hard to separate from simple detainee death while in US custody. But one particular case stands out that seems to have fallen by the wayside — the murder of CIA “ghost” detainee named Manadel al-Jamadi, who was tortured to death by a CIA team at Abu Ghraib in 2003.

“Pictures of Abu Ghraib guards Charles Graner and Sabrina Harman posing with al-Jamadi’s dead body, the so-called Ice Man, were among the most notorious of the Abu Ghraib photographs published in April 2004,” Sifton notes. “A CIA officer named Mark Swanner and an interpreter led the team that interrogated al-Jamadi. Nine Navy personnel were also implicated. An autopsy conducted by the U.S. military five days after al-Jamadi’s death found that the cause: “blunt force injuries complicated by compromised respiration.”

“Reporting by The New Yorker’s Jane Mayer and NPR’s John McChesney revealed that al-Jamadi was strung up from handcuffs behind his back, a torture tactic sometimes called a ‘Palestinian hanging,’” he adds. “After an investigation, the CIA referred the case to the Department of Justice for possible criminal prosecution of the CIA personnel involved, but no charges were ever brought. Prosecutors accused 10 Navy personnel of the crime; nine were given nonjudicial punishments, such as rank reductions and letters of reprimand, and a 10th was acquitted.”

Torture memo authors unlikely to be prosecuted

Madsen: Cheney Had Death Squad, Killed Hariri & Hobeika: Dick Cheney, the name that always pops up whenever there is talk about a serious crime someplace in the world.Well, Cheney had his own death squad CIA unit which he ran from the white house. By Cheney’s orders, the assassinations unit killed former Lebanese minister and Lebanese Forces chief Elie Hobeika on the 24th of January 2002 and former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri on the 14th of March 2005, prominent investigative journalist Wayne Madsen said.

Madsen who is known for his close ties with active circles in the CIA, was speaking to the Russia Today television when he revealed that the same squad that had assassinated Hobeika in coordination with former Israeli PM Ariel Sharon’s office, had also assassinated Hariri.
“This is something that I have heard about five years ago from CIA sources,” Madsen said. “I reported in 2004-2005 that the CIA unit linked to the White House was responsible for coordinating the assassinations in Lebanon of former Christian leader Elie Hobeika and also the former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri, and that this was done in close coordination with a similar unit operated by then Israeli PM Ariel Sharon’s office in Jerusalem,” Madsen said.

In 2002, Hobeika was to travel to The Hague to testify against Sharon on the 1982 Sabra and Shatila massacres in Beirut. However in 2005, the assassination of Hariri was meant to trigger an exceptionally favorable circumstance to destabilize Lebanon, swoop up Syria, build a US base in North Lebanon and get rid of resistance movements in the region, namely Hezbollah that was haunting Sharon.
What Madsen had revealed has drawn storms of reactions that demand Cheney be prosecuted. Madsen founded his revelations on the information uncovered by American investigative journalist Seymour Hersh and released them after establishing them.

On the 3rd of last March in Minnesota, Hersh revealed that a secret Delta Force Commandos unit known as the ‘Assassinations Wing” and Frogmen units have been assigned to carry out assassinations around the world even without passing by the Secretary of Defense and apart from the Pentagon; only through Cheney’s office. “It’s a special wing of our special operations’ community that is set independently. They do not report to anybody, except in the Clinton and Bush days. They reported directly to the Cheney office…It’s an executive assassination ring essentially and it’s been going on and on,” Hersh said.

“From what Hersh revealed, it was definitely Dick Cheney at the very top of that structure. What I had reported back in 2004-2005 was that Karl Rove, President George W. Bush’s top political adviser, he was involved along with deputy National Security Adviser in the Bush administration, people may recall, Elliot Abrams and he was involved in the Iran Contra scandal and was indicted in that scandal, but he was pardoned by the former president George H.W. Bush”

In 2005, Madsen cited one “key source’ in his report and said that “a number of intelligence sources have reported that assassinations of foreign leaders like Hariri and Hobeika are ultimately authorized by two key White House officials, Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove and Deputy National Security Adviser Elliot Abrams. In addition, Abrams is the key liaison between the White House and Sharon’s office for such covert operations, including political assassinations and Abrams is the guy the Israelis go to for a wink and a nod for such ops.”

The new revelations opened new doors on the assassination cases that have plagued Lebanon for over four decades and highlight hypotheses – mainly with regards to the Hariri assassination – that some Lebanese had concealed for the benefit of canned political accusations.

B R A V O ! ! !

When Hubris Pushes itself off the Cliff: AIPAC is engaged in their usual scheming and strong-arming at the moment and we are getting first hand evidence of how fascism comes about and how… no matter how much some people have, it is never enough. It appears they are not satisfied with the case being dropped against their spies. They want an investigation into how this was allowed to happen in the first place. Part of their logic is that the charges were brought “under a law that had barely been used in more than 90 years.” Wow… do I really need to perform an autopsy on that? Some things have been against the law for centuries but they do get used on occasion; unless you are well placed on the pyramid. ...

Those of you who visit regularly know that I’ve mentioned the apocalypse theme often over recent time. You’ve heard me talk about large shifts in our collective state of being. I’ve mentioned the approach of great and possibly grave events upon the horizon. I can’t shake this. It accompanies me through my every day. I’m generally much more hopeful than appearances warrant. I really do think there is going to be a universal hoisting upon petards. I see deep darkness infiltrated with light. I see powerful structures collapsing to the ground much as those mysterious free falling towers did. ...

There’s no question that there is more pressure than there are places for it to go. There’s no question that corruption and imbalance have moved beyond the point where they can sustain themselves. Laws of Nature are now due to come into play. We do not understand these laws but we know they exist and we are going to get first hand demonstration of them. My take was… and is… those in whom hubris has become uncontrollable shall soon be meeting the unexpected.

A War No Longer on Autopilot: What if Iraq Unravels? (You mean we thought it was all sewn up?)

Shlama,

Two mistakes does not make a right, that is, neither is accepted by any human being. However, Steven Green has been dishonor discharged from the army and is facing 17 counts which include rape and killing. He is possibly facing a whole life in prison if not the death penalty.

We all know that all the foreign forces in Iraq are considered by UN as occupying forces. It is well known that soldiers at war time will have elements
who snap in a moment of anger, fear, sorrow or any emotional affect. That thing happened during the wars of Saddam Hussein with others. Being a soldier in those wars, I heard of such acts by some soldiers even against Iraqi people who were considered not loyal, but was the Iraqi army a bad army, OF COURSE NO. At the same level, the killing of Christians has increased in many cities and the killers are Muslim Iraqis, does that mean all Iraqis hate the Christians; again, the answer is BIG NO.

Those same forces entered Germany, Japan, South Korea and are still there with different level of presence and they might have those awkward incidents as well in those countries. But, look where are those countries in terms of all levels of life. So, it is WE can change for better or worse not OTHERS.

During Saddam's era there were execution parties in Abu Ghraib, While some people were enjoying the blesses of Saddam Hussein. Do you know how many innocent Iraqis were executed or tortured till death in that prison? Then who was stealing in Iraq during the invasion and who was destroying the public property, the truth is that Iraqis were doing it.
All the Islamic and Arab countries think the same way simply because they do not think otherwise. For example, all of them insist that the president must be a Muslim and some of them do not believe they have other religions in their countries or they prohibit that. It is the way their citizens were brought up. They all consider themselves as pure, clean, right, honest and worse of all is that all the others are pigs, dirty, cowards even after they come to those countries and exercise the luxury of the life here. It is the hate that is taught in those countries against all the others that bring them up in this world rather than love, respect and accepting the others. Do you know how many crimes are committed by those here, but that does not make all of them bad nor will you hear that out of the media or government.

Ban Ki-moon's Moral Failure: For Ban, then, Israeli bombing is good -- although he would like perhaps to see a little bit less. But, in tune with his political masters, he considers Palestinians to have no right to any form of self-defense against the Israeli occupation, constant aggression and the Israeli, internationally-supported, deadly siege, with whatever means they have at their disposal.

Ban ought to have inspected the destruction in Gaza, and visited and spent time with Israel's Palestinian victims before setting foot in any UN installation. But it seems he actually avoided that on purpose to send a signal that he was not showing sympathy to "terrorists" or the people accused of harboring them, in order to inoculate himself from criticism by Israel and its chorus of apologists. He certainly saw the example of the UN special rapporteur for human rights, Princeton professor emeritus and international law expert Richard Falk, who was expelled and vilified by Israel and the US administration for faithfully and truthfully carrying out his mandate.

The State of Israel continues moving forward with its announced plans of unilateral attack on Iran. We have been informing about this for more than two years now. This will be a premeditated, unjustified, unilateral attack perpetrated by the State of Israel, the only country in the Middle East that wields Weapons of Mass Destruction - 400 nuclear artefacts ceded by the US -, and shows an unequivocable willingness to use them. Naturally, their excuse is Iran's nuclear program. The London "Times" newspaper, in its April 18,2009 edition informs that the Israeli Air Force is fully ready to attack and are only waiting to receive the green light from the new ultra-right wing Israeli primer minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his even more ultra-right wing foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman, and the IDF high command (see article "Israel stands ready to bomb Iran's nuclear sites").

THAT will be the trigger for generalized war involving WMD's - biological, chemical and nuclear. Israeli sources say that they will attack Iran with or without the Obama Administration's green light, knowing full well that Zionist power in America is above any Administration, whether Democrat or Republican. Netanyahu will meet with Obama on May 18th. Either way, once Israel attacks and Iran retailiates, the Obama Administration will be FORCED by Zionist power structures in control of the US, to fight for them (see "The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy", Stephen Walt & John Mearsheimer). This was just been ratified by "The Daily Telegraph" of 7th May.
