Question: The plant(s) in trouble in Japan were all of an old model. Is there any reason to believe that the newer model nuclear plants would have fared any better? If so, why?

John

That is a good query.
The 'old' 40 years old reactor plants at Fukishima (1, 2,3 and 4) were designed with less than 9 earthquake magnitude tremble.

However, the operating plants (1,2,3 as 4 was being reloaded with fresh fuel and its reactor was empty) all shut down safely when the 9 magnitude struck and the back-up diesel generators kicked and kept pumping cooling water to the shut down reactors and the water in the spent fuel pools sitting on top of the reactors.

However, the 10-15 meters Tsunami wave which struck knocked down the back up deisel generators one hour later. Pumped water from them stopped.

That is when the disaster commenced.

Mind you, there are 55 nuclear power plants in Japaqn. Nothing further is heard from them.

The Tsunami hit hard this one.

Now, would 'newer' model plants be designed to BOTH withstand 9 magnitude earthquakes AND a 10-15 meters Tsunami wave directly hitting the plant?

Go figure the cost.

How coincidental another incident, or what is the probability, would it be that required 'newer' plants to have been designed against this very rare natural double punch?

None.

By this coming week-end, I believe we will either find out whether the worst is over, or that the worst is going to indeed occur and the radioactive plume would be heading east to the west coasts of Canada and the US. It should arrive there in 7-10 days time.

Are you there?

Nuclear Crisis: Rising Radiation Levels Halt Work at Fukushima Plant: "We're very close now to the point of no return," Dr. Michio Kaku, a theoretical physicist, said. "It's gotten worse. We're talking about workers coming into the reactor perhaps as a suicide mission and we may have to abandon ship."

John

Further to the above, I learned today that a barrier was inplace in Fukushima plant against a Tsunami tidal wave, but it was designed to withstand up to an 8 meters high wave.
The one that hit the site was several meters higher and went over the top of the barrier.
