Humbly remembering
In the fall of 1968, while I was a student at the University of Michigan, and still reeling after the devastating defeat of the 1967 war with Israel, the Ann Arbor chapter of B'nai B'rith Youth Organization, one of the Jewish Federations of North America , had invited Shimon Perez, the current president of Israel, to deliver a speech.
After listening to his glowing boasting of the U.S. support to Israel, and in a purely intuitive outburst, I asked him the following question:
"At present, many of the Arab governments are dictatorial in ruling their people, and these governments are supported by the U.S. which is also fully supporting Israel, financially and politically. What would you expect the situation to be when the Arab people would rise against their governments and establish patriotic regimes?"
He glibly dismissed my query.
Salut to the Egyptians and the Tunisians. May other Arabs carry and pass on the torch.
