ستيفانوبولس : ولكن بعض أعضاء إدارتكم يعتقدون أنها (أي الديمقراطية) كانت الهدف.

رايس : بل كنا واضحين في ذلك، لقد كان الأمر يتعلق بالتهديد الأمني الذي يمثله صدام حسين الذي شنّ حروبا في السابق وإستخدم أسلحة الدمار الشامل وكان يطلق النار على طائراتنا في مناطق حظر الطيران وكان يهدد جيرانه وحاول إغتيال جورج بوش الأب، وكان كالسرطان في الشرق الأوسط وكان مصدرا كبيرا للإضطراب فيه مما إستوجب التعامل معه. ومثلي مثل بقية الناس أتفهم وأأسف كثيرا على الثمن المدفوع، وخاصة في الأرواح، ولكني أعلم أيضا أن لا شيء ذو قيمة يمكن الحصول عليه بدون تضحيات، وأعتقد أننا سنرى شرق أوسط مختلف، وهذا الشرق الأوسط المختلف ما كان يمكن أن يقوم لو كان صدام حسين باقيا في وسطه."ـ
