THE IRAQ WAR READER

.
"The adage that “it is the victors who write history” in matters relating particularly to war and conflict is something of a euphemism when applied to recent military campaigns conducted by America and its NATO allies. For what is disputable – no, let us say repugnant – about the official accounts of these events is not merely a difference in emphasis or nuance on the matter, which the adage may infer. It is rather that the victors’ version of history is a wholesale fabrication, an obscene travesty of actual events. It is not a case of victors writing history, more one of victors “violating history”."

Comments:
Hypocrisy of Mahathir

I am aware that some people, including a few of my friends, will be unhappy about what I am writing. But I have all my life believed that history must be told objectively lest we end up believing in fiction as millions do today regarding Islamic history of the last 14 centuries.

I find it unfortunate that the authors chose to dedicate this excellent work to Dr. Mohammad Mahathir former PM of Malaysia in recognition for his work in having set up the Kuala Lumpur War Crimes Tribunal (May 2012) against George Bush and some of his cronies.

Malaysia was a non-permanent member of the Security Council between 1989 and 1990. In 1990 Mahathir had been for many years the leader of Malaysia and ought to have understood world politics better than most of us. Nevertheless he chose to support Security Council resolutions on Iraq, particularly resolution 678 which was adopted on 29 November 1990 with 12 states in favour including Malaysia, 2 states against (Cuba and Yemen) and China abstaining. The Resolution authorized Member States to use all necessary means to force Iraq to comply with previous SC resolution to withdraw from Kuwait. Resolution 678 was the SC authorization to the US and its allies to use force against Iraq under Chapter VII of the UN Charter. It was this resolution which led to all succeeding Resolutions which led to sanctions, destruction, invasion and occupation of Iraq.

It is rather hypocritical for Mahathir to have found it convenient in 1990 to please his allies, only to wake up later and demand that perpetrators of crimes should be tried. Mahathir, like every other State leader who voted for military action against Iraq in 1990, is guilty of aiding and abetting war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. This is forcefully argued in our forthcoming book 'Genocide in Iraq' to be published later this year. If he is sincere he should have called for himself to have been included in the list of potential criminals before his tribunal.

History demands that the truth is told all the time so that people are able to decide for themselves what to believe rather than being told.
